Equipment
Competitors must carry certain "mandatory" equipment which is required to be with a competitor at all times during the event. Failure to have all the mandatory items at Competitor Check-In may result in a time penalty or the competitor not being able to start the event.
Review the photos of each item below to make sure you know what is required. You can see recommended products available in RacingThePlanet, The Outdoor Store. You can also download the full equipment list.
* Foot powder is also recommended for feet that sweat a lot.
Bring enough so that you are not dependent on medication from the event medical team. Note that using other competitor’s medication and consuming heavy quantities of painkillers can be extremely dangerous.
* Remember to buy your shoes 1 to 2 sizes larger than you would normally wear to account for swelling and tape for blisters. This is very important. Consider Goretex shoes which are water resistant.
It is important that the items fit into a bag with the following dimensions: 35cm x 35cm x 20cm / 14in x 14 x 8in.
Drop bag must include following items, in addition to the mandatory items that you will carry on the course:
1) Warm Fleece / Warm Top
2) Warm Long Pants
3) Warm Socks
4) Warm Hat
5) Waterproof Bag
Review the photos of each item below to make sure you know what is required. You can see recommended products available in RacingThePlanet, The Outdoor Store. You can also download the full equipment list.

1 of 37Backpack / Rucksack
Capable of carrying all of the Mandatory and Optional Equipment you choose. Approximately 30L backpack is optimal. Note: There is no one backpack model that works for everyone.
2 of 37Sleeping Bag
The minimum requirement combination of sleeping bag plus bag liner is 0°C/32°F. Note: See the optional equipment list for details on Bag Liners which can add up to 6°C/10°F to the rating of your sleeping bag. Note that synthetic sleeping bags keep dryer in wet weather conditions than down sleeping bags. Make sure your sleeping bag stays dry.
3 of 37HEADLAMP & BACK-UP LIGHT
Competitors are required to carry both a headlamp and a back-up light source during the event. The back-up light must be of equal strength to the primary headlamp - it can be either another headlamp or a handheld torch.
4 of 37Compass
Any model will be adequate. Note: There is no navigation in the event; this is to be carried as part of your emergency gear.
5 of 37Safety Pins
Used for attaching your bib number and event patch to your clothing and backpack, as well as during the event for other uses. Heavy duty, large safety pins are best.
6 of 37Knife / Multi-tool
A small knife or multi-tool has multiple uses during the event. A pair of scissors is not a multi-tool.
7 of 37Whistle
To attract attention in case of an emergency. Note that many backpacks include a whistle on the buckle – this is NOT sufficient for this item of equipment. You must have an emergency whistle. If you do not have one of the brands below then it must be equivalent.
8 of 37Mirror
To attract attention in case of emergency. Reflect the sun of the mirror to draw attention to yourself.
9 of 37SURVIVAL BIVVY BAG
Must be made of reflective material and a closed bag (not a blanket). You should have a thicker bivvy bag that you can repack easily as you may want to use it over your sleeping bag in wet weather conditions.
Choose a high SPF brand which is waterproof, sweat proof and non-greasy. It is recommended to bring the required amount in two separate containers in case one is lost or difficult to find.
11 of 37Lip Sunscreen
12 of 37Blister Kit
The following is a minimum requirement, but you may need more supplies based on your experience and prior history of foot blisters. You should try to anticipate the amount of supplies you might need. Note that if you do not bring enough supplies, you could be at risk of developing more severe blisters that could jeopardise your ability to finish the race.
- 10 alcohol wipes
- 2 hypodermic needles or safety pins
- 1 roll of paper tape (i.e., micorpore)
- 1 roll of elastic tape (i.e., Elastikon)
- 5 second skin or Compede pads
* Foot powder is also recommended for feet that sweat a lot.
13 of 37Medication
You should seek advice from your doctor about any medication that you plan to take during the race, including any form of painkillers. If you take painkillers, Tylenol / Paracetamol / Acetaminophen are preferred over anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen / Neurofen / Advil / Motrin / Naprosyn and others. It is NOT advised to take anti-inflammatory medication on the course. Please read the expert article called Painkillers Used during Ultramarathons, for more details. Bring enough so that you are not dependent on medication from the event medical team. Note that using other competitor’s medication and consuming heavy quantities of painkillers can be extremely dangerous.
Alcohol wipes CANNOT replace alcohol gel, but you may choose to carry both.
15 of 37TISSUE / WET WIPES
Any brand will work (at least 1 pack per day). A must for toilet use. No tissues will be provided by Event Staff.
16 of 37Red Flashing Light
This red flashing light is required IN ADDITION to your headlamp and back-up light. This is to be worn on the rear of your backpack and to be switched on when you are on the course in the dark.
17 of 37COMPRESSION BANDAGE
This forms part of your emergency equipment. It must be carried at all times on the course.
18 of 37WATERPROOF JACKET
Must be fully waterproof to keep you dry if it rains. Jacket with breathable material and with a hood is recommended.
19 of 37WARM FLEECE JACKET / WARM TOP
Many brands are appropriate, but make sure that the fleece jacket will keep you warm during day and at night when it can get cold. Alternative is to have a thin insulated jacket.
20 of 37LONG SLEEVE / SHORT SLEEVE T-SHIRT
For sun and sweat protection. Should be made of a quick dry material. It can be a technical running shirt or a baselayer. One shirt must have long sleeves.
21 of 37SHOES
Competitors wear trail or running shoes:* Remember to buy your shoes 1 to 2 sizes larger than you would normally wear to account for swelling and tape for blisters. This is very important. Consider Goretex shoes which are water resistant.
22 of 37Socks
6-7 pairs are recommended to allow a fresh pair for each day but only 5 pairs are compulsory. Many competitors wear SmartWool or Teko. Consider that your feet will get wet in river crossings and damp ground.
It is required that you wear a cap with a neck cover such as legionnaire design.
24 of 37Sunglasses
Any pair of UV protection sunglasses. Only 1 pair is mandatory but it is recommended to take 2 pairs as they are often lost or broken.
25 of 37Nationality Patches
You must wear nationality patches on both sleeves of all tops (including jackets) throughout the event. These are in addition to the RacingThePlanet patches which are provided by RacingThePlanet.
26 of 37RacingThePlanet Patches
RacingThePlanet will send you these patches approximately 6 weeks before the event.
27 of 37FOOD / COOKING
28 of 37Eating Utensil
Ideally bring more than one fork/spoon in case you lose one. Titanium products are the lightest option but are more expensive.
Use fluid replacement electrolytes with water to maintain proper hydration throughout the day. A constant supply will help the body’s systems to operate properly when under stress.
It is strongly recommended to bring tablets in addition to electrolyte drink powders. You need to bring a minimum of:
It is strongly recommended to bring tablets in addition to electrolyte drink powders. You need to bring a minimum of:
- enough powder to make a minimum of 30 liters of drink, or
- enough salt tablets / Endurolytes for 30 hours on the course (usually, the minimum is 1.5 tablets per hour = 45 tablets), or
- a combo of both (e.g., powder for 15 liters of water and tablets for 15 hours on the course). If you expect to spend more than 30 hours on the course then you should increase this accordingly.
30 of 37HYDRATION SYSTEM You must be able to carry 2.5 litres of water at one time.
Use a combination of hydration bladder and water bottles. Bottles allow for more flexibility, as bladder can be hard to refill at checkpoints. Many prefer the SmarTube or similar models.
31 of 37Warm Hat
For warmth. A Buff CANNOT substitute the warm hat. 32 of 37Gloves
For warmth. Full finger gloves required.
33 of 37INSECT REPELLENT
You may come across and some flies and small mosquitos which is why insect repellent is required. Many brands will work.
34 of 37WATER PROOF BAG (25 liter)
There is a high chance of rain. It is vital that you keep the contents of your backpack, in particular your sleeping bag and your camp clothes, dry. 25 liter minimum is the minimum size recommended.
35 of 37WATERPROOF PANTS / TROUSERS
Must be fully waterproof. Breathable lightweight material is recommended.
36 of 37WATERPROOF PANTS / TROUSERS
TIGHTS / SHORTS
One pair of full length tights / pants is required. The second pair can be either tights or shorts.
TIGHTS / SHORTS
37 of 37DROP BAG
Additional warm gear MUST be brought in a waterproof drop bag which may be
given to you at Camp if there are severe weather conditions. The Event
Director will make this decision.
Any kind of warm long pants are sufficient. Warm but lightweight materials recommended.
40 of 37WARM SOCKS
Woollen socks recommended for providing warmth and keeping your feet dry.
41 of 37WARM HAT
42 of 37WATERPROOF BAG
You must bring this in addition to the waterproof bag that you have on the course. This is to keep the items of the drop bag dry.
43 of 37SLEEPING PAD
Select a small size to save weight or a regular size for added comfort and warmth. A self-inflating half-size pad that provides padding in all the essential areas can also be light; however, it is very difficult to eliminate the air each morning for packing. Tents provided in the event do not have any ground padding. Recommended for insulation against cold ground at nights.
44 of 37BAG LINER
Bag liners are a great way to add additional warmth to lightweight sleeping bags. Most bag liners add approximately 6°C/10°F.
45 of 37TREKKING POLES
Useful if you intend to walk the majority of the course.
Pack your food and small items in zip-lock bags. For more expensive items (i.e., cameras & passports), you may consider waterproof / sand-proof bags.
47 of 37TOWEL
For cleaning off at camp.
48 of 37TOOTHBRUSH & TOOTHPASTE
Any brand will do. A small-sized travel toothbrush is recommended.
49 of 37WRISTWATCH / INSTRUMENT
Any brand will do. An electronic compass, alarms and timer can be useful. Speed and distance monitor (pedometer), barometer and heart rate monitor provide interesting feedback.
50 of 37GPS
Choose a model that uses changeable batteries, not rechargeable batteries. Competitors will not have access to recharge their batteries. The course is marked every 25 meters. GPS coordinates are not provided. A GPS is most useful for tracking distance.
A way to charge your iPod, camera and other powered devices.
52 of 37CAMERA
Any small digital camera will do. If your camera is not waterproof, place it in double zip lock bags.
53 of 37BOOK / MAGAZINE
Tear out pages you plan to read.
54 of 37TRAINING BOOKS / MAPS
Materials to prepare for the event.
55 of 37FLAGS
Handmade, high quality flags. One for each event.
56 of 37SCARF / HEADGEAR
A Buff® is ideal as it can be used for multiple purposes - scarf, headgear, sweatband, etc. Highly recommended.
57 of 37GAITERS
This is a personal choice - some wear gaiters, others do not. Ankle gaiters keep debris out of your shoes.
58 of 37SPORTS BRA
Women-only
59 of 37EATING TIN / CUP
Useful for cooking at the camp fire. Titanium products are the lightest but very expensive. Many people cut the top off of the plastic bottles provided at the event to use as cups.
