CONCLUDED 1 AUGUST 2015
NEXT ROVING RACE IN SRI LANKA (Starts on 14 Feb 2016)

Equipment

Competitors must carry certain "mandatory" equipment which is required to be with a competitor at all times during the event. Failure to have all the mandatory items at Competitor Check-In may result in a time penalty or the competitor not being able to start the event.

Review the photos of each item below to make sure you know what is required. You can see recommended products available in RacingThePlanet, The Outdoor Store. You can also download the full equipment list.
Capable of carrying all of the Mandatory and Optional Equipment. A 25-30L backpack is optimal. Note: There is no one backpack model that works for everyone.
2 of 36WATERPROOF BAG (35L)
The waterproof bag must be a minimum of 35 liters in size. There is a chance of rain, and it is vital to keep the contents of your backpack (in particular, your sleeping bag and camp clothes) dry. Using a combination of smaller bags does not fulfil this requirement.

The minimum requirement combination of sleeping bag plus bag liner is 0C/32F. Note: Bag Liners can add up to 6C/10F to the rating of your sleeping bag. Sleeping Pads also provide additional warmth and comfort this is highly recommended.
Competitors are required to carry both a headlamp and a back-up light source during the event. The back-up light must be of equal strength to the primary headlamp - it can be either another headlamp or a handheld torch.
This red flashing light is required IN ADDITION to your headlamp and back-up light. This is to be worn on the rear of your backpack and to be switched on when you are on the course in the dark.
6 of 36COMPASS
Any model will be adequate. Note: There is no navigation in the event; this is to be carried as part of your emergency gear. Compass on the watch is not sufficient.
Used for attaching your bib number and event patch to your clothing and backpack, as well as during the event for other uses. Heavy duty, large safety pins are best.
A small knife or multi-tool has multiple uses during the event. A pair of scissors is not a multi-tool.
9 of 36WHISTLE
To attract attention in case of an emergency. Note that many backpacks include a whistle on the buckle – this is NOT sufficient for this item of equipment. You must have an emergency whistle. If you do not have one of the brands below then it must be equivalent.
10 of 36MIRROR
To attract attention in case of emergency. Reflect the sun of the mirror to draw attention to yourself.
Must be a closed bivvy bag (not a blanket) made of reflective material. We recommend a thick bag that you can repack easily as you may want to use it over your sleeping bag in cold or wet weather conditions.
12 of 36SUNSCREEN
30ml / 1 oz minimum
Choose a high SPF brand which is waterproof, sweat proof and non-greasy. It is recommended to bring the required amount in two separate containers in case one is lost or difficult to find.
14 of 36BLISTER KIT
The following is a minimum requirement, but you may need more supplies based on your experience and prior history of foot blisters. You should try to anticipate the amount of supplies you might need. Note that if you do not bring enough supplies, you could be at risk of developing more severe blisters that could jeopardise your ability to finish the race.
  • 10 alcohol wipes
  • 2 hypodermic needles or safety pins
  • 1 roll of paper tape (i.e. micropore)
  • 1 roll of elastic tape (i.e. Elastikon)
  • 5 second skin or Compede pads
Lubricant such as Bodyglide or Loop is also highly recommended. Foot powder is recommended for feet that sweat a lot.
15 of 36MEDICATION
You should seek advice from your doctor about any medication that you plan to take during the race, including any form of painkillers. If you take painkillers, Tylenol / Paracetamol / Acetaminophen are preferred over anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen / Neurofen / Advil / Motrin / Naprosyn and others. It is NOT advised to take anti-inflammatory medication on the course. Please read the expert article called Painkillers Used during Ultramarathons, for more details.
Bring enough so that you are not dependent on medication from the event medical team. Note that using other competitor’s medication and consuming heavy quantities of painkillers can be extremely dangerous.
16 of 36ALCOHOL GEL
60 ml / 2 fl oz minimum
Alcohol wipes CANNOT replace alcohol gel, but you may choose to carry both.
Any brand will work (at least 1 pack per day). A must for toilet use. No tissues will be provided by Event Staff.
This forms part of your emergency equipment. It must be carried at all times on the course.
Temperatures can get very cold. This must be a warm top (preferably fleece or down jacket). An alternative is a thick, long-sleeve capilene top. Three are required, one you will carry with you and two for your drop bag.
The jacket must be fully waterproof (preferably also windproof) to keep you dry and warm.
21 of 36RAIN PONCHO
Required for additional warmth and wet protection. A rain poncho is lightweight and easy to put on/take off when the weather changes.
22 of 36WARM HAT
For warmth in the cold. A Buff does not fulfill this requirement. Three warm hats are required, 1 which you will carry with you and 2 which you will place in your drop bag.
23 of 36GLOVES
For warmth in the cold. Full finger gloves are required. Three pairs are required, 1 pair which you will carry with you and 2 pairs which you will place in your drop bag.
Two pairs of shorts / tights / pants are required. One pair must cover your full leg as it can get very cold. An additional pair of warm long pants are required for your drop bag. An additional pair of waterproof pants are required for your drop bag.
Two required. Should be made of a quick dry material. Wear long-sleeves if you are sensitive to the sun and / or cold.
26 of 36SHOES
Competitors wear trail or running shoes:
* Remember to buy your shoes 1 to 2 sizes larger than you would normally wear to account for swelling and tape for blisters. This is very important.
27 of 36SOCKS
6-7 pairs are recommended to allow a fresh pair for each day but only 4 pairs are compulsory. Many competitors wear two layers. Two pairs to carry with you and two pairs for your drop bag.
28 of 36HEADGEAR / CAPS
It is required that you wear a cap with a neck cover such as legionnaire design.
29 of 36SUNGLASSES
Any pair of UV protection sunglasses. Only 1 pair is mandatory but it is recommended to take 2 pairs as they are often lost or broken.
You must wear nationality patches on both sleeves of all tops (including jackets) throughout the event. These are in addition to the RacingThePlanet patches which are provided by RacingThePlanet.
31 of 36RACINGTHEPLANET PATCHES
RacingThePlanet will send you these patches approximately 6 weeks before the event.
32 of 36FOOD / COOKING
You are responsible for your own food for the entire event. You need a dried meal for the night before the race, as well as a minimum of 2000 calories/day during the race (7 days).
Ideally bring more than one fork/spoon in case you lose one. Titanium products are the lightest option but are more expensive.
34 of 36ELECTROLYTES / SALT TABLETS
  • Enough for 7 days
Use fluid replacement electrolytes with water to maintain proper hydration throughout the day. A constant supply will help the body’s systems to operate properly when under stress.
It is strongly recommended to bring tablets in addition to electrolyte drink powders. You need to bring a minimum of:
  • enough powder to make a minimum of 30 liters of drink, or
  • enough salt tablets / Endurolytes for 30 hours on the course (usually, the minimum is 1.5 tablets per hour = 45 tablets), or
  • a combo of both (e.g., powder for 15 liters of water and tablets for 15 hours on the course). If you expect to spend more than 30 hours on the course then you should increase this accordingly.
It is recommended that you test these supplements during your training and follow the recommended amounts.
35 of 36HYDRATION SYSTEM You must be able to carry 2.5 litres of water at one time.
Use a combination of hydration bladder and water bottles. Bottles allow for more flexibility, as bladder can be hard to refill at checkpoints. Many prefer the SmarTube or similar models.
36 of 36DROP BAG
Weather in Ecuador is unpredictable. For this reason we are requiring all competitors to bring an additional 25-35 liter waterproof bag with extra warm clothing that will be stored at each Camp. It is essential that these are inside a fully waterproof bag to ensure all the items inside stay dry. Note that it is likely that you wont be able to access the drop bag during the week, as it is an emergency item. The MANDATORY items to be placed in the drop bag are:
  • Two warm fleece or expedition weight baselayer shirts
  • One pair of warm long pants. Warm but lightweight material is recommended
  • One pair of waterproof pants. Breathable lightweight material is recommended to keep dry in wet weather conditions
  • Two pair of socks. Woollen socks are recommended for providing warmth and keeping your feet dry.
  • Two warm hats (a Buff does NOT meet this requirement)
  • Two pairs full fingered warm gloves
You may come across and some flies and small mosquitos which is why insect repellent is required. Many brands will work.
There is a high chance of rain. It is vital that you keep the contents of your backpack, in particular your sleeping bag and your camp clothes, dry. 25 liter minimum is the minimum size recommended.
39 of 36WARM FLEECE / BASELAYER SHIRT
Men's Fleece Jackets
Women's Fleece Jackets
40 of 36WARM LONG PANTS
Men’s Pants
Women’s Pants
Any kind of warm long pants are sufficient. Warm but lightweight materials recommended.
41 of 36WARM SOCKS
Woollen socks recommended for providing warmth and keeping your feet dry.
42 of 36WARM HAT
You must bring this in addition to the waterproof bag that you have on the course. This is to keep the items of the drop bag dry.
44 of 36SLEEPING PAD
Select a small size to save weight or a regular size for added comfort and warmth. A self-inflating half-size pad that provides padding in all the essential areas can also be light; however, it is very difficult to eliminate the air each morning for packing. Tents provided in the event do not have any ground padding. Recommended for insulation against cold ground at nights.
45 of 36BAG LINER
Bag liners are a great way to add additional warmth to lightweight sleeping bags. Most bag liners add approximately 6°C/10°F.
Useful if you intend to walk the majority of the course.
Pack your food and small items in zip-lock bags. For more expensive items (i.e., cameras & passports), you may consider waterproof / sand-proof bags.
48 of 36TOWEL
For cleaning off at camp.
Any brand will do. A small-sized travel toothbrush is recommended.
Any brand will do. An electronic compass, alarms and timer can be useful. Speed and distance monitor (pedometer), barometer and heart rate monitor provide interesting feedback.
51 of 36GPS
Choose a model that uses changeable batteries, not rechargeable batteries. Competitors will not have access to recharge their batteries. The course is marked every 25 meters. GPS coordinates are not provided. A GPS is most useful for tracking distance.
A way to charge your iPod, camera and other powered devices.
53 of 36CAMERA
Any small digital camera will do. If your camera is not waterproof, place it in double zip lock bags.
54 of 36BOOK / MAGAZINE
Tear out pages you plan to read.
Materials to prepare for the event.
56 of 36FLAGS
Handmade, high quality flags. One for each event.
A Buff® is ideal as it can be used for multiple purposes - scarf, headgear, sweatband, etc. Highly recommended.
58 of 36GAITERS
This is a personal choice - some wear gaiters, others do not. Ankle gaiters keep debris out of your shoes.
59 of 36SPORTS BRA
Women-only
Useful for cooking at the camp fire. Titanium products are the lightest but very expensive. Many people cut the top off of the plastic bottles provided at the event to use as cups.
A list of useful items that will help with your recovery process at the end of each day
