The 4 Deserts Race Series is delighted to welcome the LITTLE DESERT RUNNERS CLUB to the Sahara Race (Namibia) where there will be fifteen members joining their very first big race!!!
The idea of the Little Desert Runners Club is to give people who consider themselves beginners to running the motivation and opportunity to train and prepare together. It is based out of Germany but has members across Austria, Swtizerland and other close-by countries in Europe.
Rafael Fuchsgruber, 55, from Germany is the Founder of the Club. He is also an extremely competent and experienced ultra runner – often found on the podium of big races. He is also the author of the best seller book, Running Wild.
“The idea came to me at RacingThePlanet: Sri Lanka early in 2016“ said Rafael. “I was injured before the race and I had to fight hard. However, I noticed all the emotions, joy and enthusiasm of the rookies during this race. It reminded me very much of my early days.“ Seeing this really motivated him in this race and the idea came to start the Little Desert Runners Club.
Rafael then went to work to get the Club started. He spoke about the club in the very successfull german podcast “Fat Boys Run“ with Philipp Jordan. Then he put the idea out to Runners World and Laufen.de as well as in his talks, TV talkshows and more. He was also able to get some generous sponsors for the club which is very generously supported by X-Bionic, YETI sleeping bags and down jackets, Ultra Sports, Raidlight and Julbo Eyeware.
The concept has been very well received there are currently nearly 200 members with fifteen people set to be on the start line of the Sahara Race (Namibia) and a bigger group preparing for 4 Deserts races in 2018.
The runners in the club represent the variety that you will always see at an ultramarathon. They are between 20 - 55 years old with a colurful mixture of professions including artists, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, employees from all trades from security to finance.
There are almost all beginners – but all are strong. Many are good walkers who reach the finish line of the Sahara Race (Namibia) at a slower pace but are able to make it. Only one German runner has completed 100km before, but one of the women has competed in the 100km championships on the German team. However they all have different training concepts.
The Club provides more personal help to the complete newbies while the more experienced runners get information on the training and equipment, but already know what to do. There have also been lectures on nutrition topics in training and competition from one of the sponsors Ultra Sports. Rafael has shared his expereinces as have other experiences runners. They have talked a lot about equipment such as backpacks, clothes, leggings and shoes.
For Rafael his goal for the Little Desert Runners is to „see them all smiling at the finish line“ . But a few of us are fast - even though they are beginners so we will see….
Everyone is welcome to join the Little Desert Runners Club. Start by going to their Facebook page. The communication runs in German - but there are good programs to translate.
