Course
A new course is introduced for the Gobi March (China) 2013 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the event!
The Gobi March is a 250-kilometer (155-mile) footrace that takes place over 6 stages in 7 days. Approximate distances of each stage are listed in the box to the right. Note that all distances listed are approximate and that accurate distances will be provided in the course book that competitors receive at Competitor Check-In the day before the event start.

The Gobi March (China) 2013 course is new – located in the Bortala Mongol and Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefectures – to celebrate the Gobi March 10-Year Anniversary. This beautiful course takes competitors across a wide variety of terrain, including grassland, dirt track, dry riverbeds, plains and farmland. Competitors will trek over hills, through mountain valleys and past local villages.

Checkpoints
Checkpoints are set along the course at intervals of approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles).  At each checkpoint competitors must:

  • Be logged on arrival by event staff
  • Take a minimum allocation of drinking water for the next section
  • Abide by instructions – as necessary – given by event staff due in the case of changing course conditions (e.g. thunderstorms, sandstorms, fog, terrain changes, etc.)

At each checkpoint competitors can:

  • Rest for a short period of time
  • Take advantage of the shade that the checkpoint tent affords
  • Seek advice and treatment, if appropriate, from the checkpoint’s medical doctor

Please note that adverse weather conditions and other factors can result in changes being made to the course.

The Long March
The Long March, which is the much-anticipated Stage 5 in all 4 Deserts events, is a longer stage of 70-90 kilometers (43-56 miles) in length. This stage is roughly double the length of the previous four stages.

The Long March follows much the same format as previous stages: checkpoints are located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) apart; however, many competitors will take the opportunity (the only one in the week) to have a few hours of sleep at a designated Overnight Checkpoint.

At the Overnight Checkpoint, there will usually be a tent in which competitors can sleep as well as a campfire or stove where hot water is available for drinks and meals.
