Stage 3
02-Sep-2014 03:58:19 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Well that was a little more painful, but the outstandingly beautiful scenery made up for it!

Big toe nail is on the way out, but the blister on my heal that I burst last night with a safety pin has not got worse. Well now I’ve got the more interesting parts out of the way. Won’t explain the toilet [hole] tents or joy of snoring, and armpit/feet smells (no showers here for 6 days).

Sadly Jane, one half of the ablution sisters has dropped (possibly heat exposure) as well as one of our Ecuadorian friends.

We started today to the red hot chillis, and blasted through the first two checkpoints in 3.15 hour (approx. 20km), lovely long beaches, horrible long sandy tracks, incredible and desolate tsingy gorges, I cannot do them justice and wish I could upload my pictures. Some river crossings, the best of which was 1.5km from the finish line, where, despite the warning of crocodiles I had a welcome bath (someone kindly gave me some soap flakes).

Oh, and nearly got bitten by a snake whilst avoiding another one on the trail!

After last night’s campsite on the beach, where the locals partied all night (until 6am) with drums and the sacrifice of three zebu cows, tonight’s site is up on a plateau , surrounded by valleys and then other plateaus, each of which looks like an extended Capetonian table mountain.

Clouds coming up, could be I for a spot of rain, I’m off for my dinner, not sure what the dried food holds in store for me, but it hasn’t been bad so far.

Dying for a cold can of coke!

Wish they could tune into your Spotify Kyra and Brendan : )

IF my counting is correct, is long day for you which means by the time you read this, it will be your day off. It sounds like you are taking everything in your stride, pardon the pun. Well done & keep it going.

Hi Daddy! I can't wait to see the amazing photos that you've taken and I wish I could be on those long sandy beaches with you! If you do happen to see another snake you should try and catch it and bring it home for brendan (i'm kidding please don't)! You can do it daddy you're half way there! I miss you tons and can't wait to hear all the amazing stories about your journey. Lots of love, KJ

It sounds like you are handling everything beautifully, blisters included. The crocodile warning sounds a little worrying...but exciting! It looks like it is the Nile crocodile that is in Madagascar, Crocodylus niloticus. Wikipedia says they have as many as 68 teeth and can exert 5,000 pounds of force when they bite -- but, here's the kicker which could come in handy if you decide to take another bath -- their musculature is really unbalanced and it's apparently easy to hold their mouths shut. So, point is, if a big Crocky-Wock comes in for a chomp, try to grab its jaws and hold them together (or something to that effect..)! With that intriguing defense strategy, have a blast on the trails tomorrow.

Well done, Lorence - look forward to hearing all the war stories over a few cold cokes (joke), beers back in HK. The rest is downhill, enjoy! Gai Yao!

Sounds incredibly grueling. ...especially the long sandy treks. You are doing amazing. Keep up the good work and rejoice in what you have accomplished each day!

Sounds great Daddy. Glad your listening to some decent music and its a shame you can't use your spotify there, I mean it is Madagascar so it could be tough. But I hope all is going well and hang in there for the next 3 days. Livin on a Prayer should have been today to show your progress but thats alright. Best of luck from Hong Kong Brendan J

Because it's Madagascar! and to tighten up so I'm
