82 Days and Counting Towards Madagascar….
10-Jun-2014 02:36:08 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

…. and if I’m honest, my first real training run was yesterday. I managed 30km at a slow pace (but without any ill effects), across country, and with a very light pack. Mentally, I felt like I was off first base – making progress. The trouble with having done five desert runs before is that a) people think you are always very fit (not always the case - I too go rusty) and b) it’s easy to be complacent with training because you know you’ve done it before. Usually I start training with a backpack three months before the event. All competitors are required to be totally self sufficient in the race, which means carrying all gear and food. Given the fact that I’ve barely trained, I’ll go straight into training with a pack weighing about 5kg. Closer to the event, I’ll increase it to around 6.5kg, which is likely to be my final pack weight. I don’t believe in training with too heavy a pack, as it just makes the training take longer. Last week I invited all the Singapore based Madagascar competitors over to my house in Singapore to share ideas. It was great to meet West, Leana, Steve, Kerry, David and Zhen, for the first time. It reminded me that one of the best things about doing these events is the people you meet along the way. That evening’s discussions opened my mind up to all of the jabs needed, the reptiles we might encounter along the way, and also how much new equipment is out there to buy (I’ll be sticking with my old stuff, but it’s interesting to note the new trends nonetheless). I need to make a decision on my shoes. That’s my goal this week. I’m moving away from Asics, as I have been plagued with blisters in the past. I need something that assists with over-pronation. Last week I had a great yoga session and was strong in the gym. As distinct from past desert runs, I think my cross-training is much better. But I do need to pick up the running miles. I’m really proud that ChapmanCG has launched the Tommy Lim Initiative, last week. The press releases on our website talk more about what we are hoping to achieve with this charity. Tommy, a former employee, inspired me a lot and I feel privileged to be able to run this ultra-marathon in his honour. I hope this will bring more attention, both in Singapore and internationally, to physically disabled people receiving more support with their hobbies and activities outside of work that improve their mental health and make them feel better about themselves. Tommy worked hard for ChapmanCG, and it gave me a real kick to see how much he appreciated being given financial support from the company to train in the gym, despite his physical disability.

Brookes are a good equivalent to Asics - I have recently swapped and love the Brookes at the moment. Do send us the link to the Tommy Lim Initiative.

Why are you competing?
To re-sync my personal and work balance. Ironic
that it takes entering an ultra marathon to get
myself focused on this!
