Stage 5
18-May-2012 03:18:34 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

A mini UTMB experience, just a little hotter, dustier and a few more camels and goats….

It was a brutal 86km with significant climbing and descending. One hill alone was 890metres. But it all worked to plan… Quick start, follow the leading pack to CP1, pace to CP2 and then the disappointment to find out that despite all that somehow I was in 21st position. Then a miracle, shortly after CP2 I saw a group of runners running back towards me, they were lost and so was I for following the back of that pack. Fortunately I was able to figure out the way back to course and I pushed ahead, I was now in 17th with good fortune, the temperature was rising and we were at the start of an uphill canyon, all the elements I loved. By CP5 I was in 10th position. I knew there was at least one runner who would be able to catch me. The rest of the plan was to go as fast as I can on the hills and turn this into a UTMB practice session. At about CP7 I met with Lucy Marriott and we were both starting to suffer. It is amazing though how a running partner can help you in these extreme situations. We were able to push each other and we finished at about 7.22pm before sunset as joint 11th.

Overall time sub 40 check (33 hours) and final position 13th (as I say y favorite position)

Thank you for all your support this week. I think this is my retirement message from the world of ulti-stage desert running.

Stage 4
16-May-2012 07:50:31 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

This is not my intended text but I feel I have to tell you I am typing in the middle of a sand  storm in the open and I can barely see the screen....

It was not planned but it seems like I have completed each stage roughly in 5 hours. (I am now fullly covered in sand)

Yesterday, it was cool in the morning  when we woke up (at 4am) so I wore  my jacket for the first time. However, just as I was taking it off I felt something in its pocet. To my surprise they were a pair of cufflinks my dear wife Rana gave me asa gift a while back. They are in fact my favourite, they are tin the shape he attacking ships from Space Invaders. Ii have kept them with my camera for good luck and it worked. My anckle did not cause any problems. In fact, everything held perfectly. I came in 21st.

It was a very hard course with a group of very experienced runners. Barring some unexpected injury goal one is well in sight. But goal two of top 20 seems hard. Let's see how tomorrow goes. But regardless, thank you for all your support and I can't wait to see you all. Especially my dear wife Rana....

Rana, the last camp is almost 6km from Petra. You should come on Friday.... Have a safe flight and excellent job with the presentation...

Stage 3
15-May-2012 08:01:42 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Before any notes,

Thank you all for the messages. They cheers me up while I am melting under the Arabian sun.

We just measured the temperature outside our tent and the scale that  went up to 50 could not... Then we tried in the tent and it was above 40C... That`s hot no matter where youy grew up.

I was doing event better today but unfortunately twisted my ancle after checkpoint one and had to walk for the next 5km as the pain was worrying me. Then with music and the most breathtaking (even more than yesterday) scenary I forgot the pain and started running again and as it got hotter I managed to get faster.

I am  very happy with where I am, the main goal was sub 40hr finish, I am at 15ish after about 120km, so on track. The second objective was a top 20 finish which Lucy RB keeps encouraging me to go for but it is a very fast group here.... The long day will tell!

As for tomorrow, if the anckle permits more of the same to leave some juice for the long day....

PS: the doctors think it is only soft tissue, i have had the priviledge of having an ice pack in the desert, they also said run even if it hurts you can't damage it and offered any medication I like ;-)

Rana how did the presentation go?

what a day!
14-May-2012 07:09:19 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

The first half I was cursing myself for pushing a little too hard on day one. The second half I just could not slow down and managed to miss the famous arch of Wadi Rum. Apparently so did the rest of my tent.

The scenery is sensational. The trails are hard but with plenty of ups and downs they are in fact a mini UTMB excercise. The main difference being most of the time you are absolutely on your own without another soul in sight.

I feel better today then I did yesterday. I did run harder but ended up 2 places down. It is a very hard running and experienced group here.

So far I am enjoying it and looking forward to the next day..

Thank you for your messages, they truly help. They are an excellent treat to come back to.

Rana my dear have a safe flight and I know you will do wonderfully!

Love to you all.

Why oh why!
13-May-2012 01:24:18 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

It was a hard day and I have probably pushed myself a little too hard. Tomorrow might not be so much after all.

Nonetheless, it was an amazing 39kms. Starting from the most amazing camp site this morning covered on all sides with hills that belonged in the wild west. The only problem was the dogs at night who have in this region discovered communicating using echos off the cliffs, all night long!

The day was mostly soft to hard packed sand with some fun climbs and decents but hot, very hot especially when the wind stopped it was unbearable. Fortunately I was able to continue at a decent pace and got it before it was too much.

Already recovered from the day and looing foward to running in the Lawrences Playground tomorrow.

Keep the e-mails and comments coming. They help...
