Stage 5

The Long March done! Over 240km completed, and man, do my feet know it !

Course was 87km from hell. Started pleasantly enough with an awesome 20km through a canyon with unbelievable sights. Took a load of photos which I will upload next week. Then it went pear shaped for me and about half the field who through some miscommunication took a wrong turn and went 3km out of the way. 3km back again meant an extra 6km done in 40 degrees for no gain. It was almost a meltdown moment in the heat. So took a couple of HTFU pills, and after a few kind words (!!) to myself to get it together, I proceeded on my own for the next 20km through the most sapping canyon trek I have ever had. 20km of walled in dried river bed, with no wind. Was a bit disconcerting to see the odd person go and lie down under rock ledges to get shade, but I took the approach of to keep going and get to the next checkpoint.

Then encountered a 1000 metre climb over a 9km road which was brutal, but able to maintain a decent pace. At that time I was close on 50km done, so psychologically was a big milestone. Knew then no matter how rubbish I felt, I was going to get over the line. Got 2km out from the finish line at 2.55am, but then took another hour to scale down a rocky mountain face that absolutely killed what was left of my feet. Only ate sports bars the whole 20 odd hours, but also consumed over 20 litres of electrolytes....I am so sick of the taste of that stuff now. Bowl of raspberries and vanilla ice cream was the fantasy food yesterday.

Took a few hours sleep and then ate some food, and now watching the remainder of the field come in. A 68 year old Japanese lady with a backpack about the same size as her just finished to a standing ovation from the other competitors.

Now trying to recover. Have eaten about 2000 calories in the last 2 hours. Tomorrow is the victory lap into Petra itself. That is about 5km away from where I am now, so looking forward to that. Loads of photo ops.

So not totally over, but there or there abouts, barring a major disaster. Cant wait to tuck into a pepperoni pizza and a cold coke tomorrow before leaving Jordan. By far the toughest thing I have ever done, but body has held up well, and only the feet are dying on me.

Thanks again for all the emails and blog comments. I thought about them all a lot during some of the dark times yesterday.
