Life on Mars
16-May-2012 07:16:02 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Well that is the end of the short stages. I am very happy as I managed to hold my place, around 92 or  93, over a very hot relentless Stage. Again the scenery at the beginning of the day was spectacular, crossing a vast sandy desert plain, then up a long climb where we passed two huge stone arches. From then on it was very hot and just a case of getting from one checkpoint to the next without going crazy. Luckily for me the other woman in m tent, Simone, is an absolute trooper so we walked through the worst of the day together.

At last the sand came to an end and we were on solid ground so I ran as much as I could of the last 10k into camp.

Right now I can just see the screen through the blustering sand. This is what Mars must be kike, totally inhospitable. The cybertyent is collapsing around me as I write. It is going to be some night! We  are on the edge of an immense canyon that stretches in both directions as far as the eye can see. There is no vegetation whatsoever, just baked earth. Imagine the dirt road at Yass in the drought, expand that to become a whole environment, and that is here.

My feet were sore this morning, but along the way they started to feel fine, so I'll leave well alone tonight..I felt pretty shattered when I got to camp, but I had a lie down in the blowing sand, drank a bit , nibbled on a few crackers and now feel great. Relatively! I am positively hallucinating about the roast beef at Rules Dad, I can't wait.

I'm glad everything is going well at home.

Tomorrow is 90k, the Long Stage, so it will be a very tough day. Don't worry if my time seems slow, I may well rest through the heat of the day then get going again as it cools off. The stars at night are gorgeous so the thought of continuing through the cool of the night is quite appealing.

I will post again when I have finished the Stage, sometime on Friday.

The messages have been great, so thank you so much for following my progress and taking the time to send your encouragement.

Until Friday, No 76.

Hi Margaret, I was really excited when Margaret F told me you were actually running the Jordan race. I was very keen, and really envious, to read your updates on the blog and certainly wish you all the very best for the rest of the race. On the other hand I am very glad that I didn't take you up on the invitation for a run when I sat next to you at Margaret's birthday party, who knows where that may have led!!!!!!! It makes running a marathon look like "kids stuff"! All power to you and may the miles (kilometers) simply "fly" by. All the best and good luck; Steve Fayle

You'll be well into your long stage while I'm writing this in sunny Sydney. Hope the stars put on a great show for you. Not far to the finish now - I know you'll make it; you've trained too hard for it to let anything get in your way. Enjoy every step - you are amazing.

Margaret, You are amazing! I went for a short run this morning here in Dallas. The air was heavy and it is already quite warm here. I thought of you in the desert and realized it was quite cool instead. My brother went to AMntartica last year and described it much like your description today. I'm glad your feet are holding up! Enjoy every step! Lots of love, Martha

You must have told everyone doing the race about the roast beef at Rules- can only imagine that the reason all are smiling in all the pictures is that they are hallucinating as well lol .We're all waiting to hear how you've gone in this long long stage,Bronwyn

I imagine you will read this after the long stage but Margaret - you have made it to the long stage. Wonderful. I can imagine you in the mars like desert and think that walking some of it at night is a good idea. Glad Simone's companionship adds to your day. Was so excited to see you run the last 10 or so kms on day 4. You are strong.

You are doing amazing Margaret. I doubt very much that you will, but if ever those meany DNF thoughts cause you to think about giving up, think of the reason why you've held on and trained for so long. Live what you love Margaret - you are certainly doing that. Can't wait to hear how you go on the long day! Jess

Margaret, my dear, I'm sure everyone is enjoying your daily coverage of the Jordan Race. It allows us all to share your experience with much greater involvement and creates a graphic picture of the whole scene. Your progress to date has been phenomenal, but now you're on The Long March - 89.4k! It's exhausting to even think about it, but you have all the right components working for you driven by your intense determination to complete the Race successfully - YOU WILL ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL and I look forward to seeing you personally in London next week. Good luck, every step of the way. Love, Margaret and Tammy.
