Can't Sleep Clowns Will Eat Me
14-May-2012 07:52:14 AM [(GMT-04:00) Atlantic Time(Canada)]

Sleep has eluded me again, managed to piece together three hours give or take last night, the ol' jimmy leg kept me up. I've crossed over from sleep deprived to half insane and am staring at the abyss of bat sh*t crazy.

Day 2 is complete and I did ok today, unfortunately both Brian and RJ have left camp and are no doubt headed for Petra, showers and pool time...jealous...

I can't check other blog posts from here so I'm not sure what the two of them posted last night, no doubt there were two conflicting tales of heroism with me the villan. I'll do my best to give an impartial view until I see their post at which point I'll have to defend myself.

We started yesterday and RJ was in trouble from the first minute, by the time we got to 5km RJ was nowhere to be found, we waited until he caught up and he was clearly struggling. Jones immediately got him sitting down and started on the electrolytes and water, even got him to drink a pepsi to try and even him out. We got him up and moving and made it to about the 12km mark where we had to sit him down in the shade and get some anti nasea meds in him. After the meds and lots of water and electrolytes he came around and was getting strong enough we were confident in leaving him on the trail. Brian waited at every check point and made sure he was ok and was gettting the fluids he needed all the time forgetting to hydrate properly himself. The resulting delay of a couple of hours put us all out in the afternoon sun with nowhere to hide. Jones started to cramp up before the camp and was slow getting up and in. He did manage to give me his bag for the last little bit and managed to get his timing card swiped well before me. By morning both of the guys were still feelling the effects of the heat from the day before and were out of the race at the first check point. I'm not sure if RJ realized how much work Brian did and how concerned he was but from my point of view he sacrificed his race to make sure we were still in the race. This story probably won't go over well with Jones at the rugby club, he likes to have a reputation as a tough old guy but there you have it...Brian Jones, caring individual.

I'm still here, for now, it's a race you have to take one step at a time and the course is brutal, today was hot and windy, like walking 40km with a hairdryer in your face and ever now and then when you're not expecting it, somebody throws a handfull of sand in your face with fine ankle deep sand under foot. Lost a few competitors today, hopefully we'll keep everybody else.

The staff and competitors are very friendly and supporting, it's great, everybody is rooting for you to finish.

Thanks for all the great messages from home, keep them coming! Love you Sarah!

Keep up the good work Chris! Finish it.

Keeping you in my prayers, Chris. You are tough but remember in the whole scheme of things, it's only a race! Already you have proven your mettle. You could try praying the Rosary to help you meditate and sleep. There will be cold Coors and plenty of bacon for you in our fridge when you return. Hugs, Nancy

Hey Chris, I remember when you came to me at Jacques/Stantec and told me that you'd do anything..well, this certainly proves it! Not sure how it compares to contaminated site remediation. I'm sure it's close.. in that there's dirt...:). Kick butt!

Looks like your at the place where we seperate the boy's from the viking's, I've only ever known you to be a viking. Keep going! Also, I have put 24 pale ale on ice for you, but I will soon have to put another 24 on, this trip is becoming drunk and expensive, so pick up the pace a little if you could please.

Stage three is over, what an accomplishment. We are very proud of you. Keep going.

Ha ha Aaen the only reason I let you carry my bag 50 yards was I was hoping they would give you a one hour time penalty :) and two I thought I was going to puke and didn't want to throw up on my bag which was also my pillow. Do your best buddy, I am proud of you / bri

He's gone mad with power, like that Albert Schweitzer guy. Aaen, we are all proud of you for what you have accomplished so far; but no one is really surprised...after all, you are Chris Aaen. Jones and RJ, I am sure it is disappointing, but there is only a small group of people in the world that could even think about doing what you guys did. Keep plugging away Aaen, we are following you every step of the way.

Posted: 15-May-2012 02:41:56 PM

Chris, looks like Jonesy and RJ have adopted my rules for tackling; just let Aaen do it. And you always do; if Boz was there with you the metaphor would be complete. Keep it up man, we're proud of you! PS - if you find a coyote talking in Johnny Cash's voice you are hallucinating.

Sleep can be an elusive thing, I never do much of it especially after physical exertion. But if I form a picture in my mind of those hot sultry afternoons at Littleforks, with friends and the spectacular surroundings sometimes it helps me drift Off, just a thought, sleep will come, and you have the determination and sturborness of a mule so the completion of you goal is in sight, go get it. We are all with you. Mac

Chris you're doing amazingly well. Just tick off each 5k and the stages will go by. Everyone here is proud of you and admire your (RJ's and Jones') tenacity. Stay safe and strong.

Following along your race has been pretty inspirational Chris. Keep trudging along dude.

Posted: 15-May-2012 12:14:55 PM

Hey Buddy, keep up the good work. You already scare all the younger guys at the club so if you come back a lil loopy from to much time in the dessert its not really a big deal. Just keep telling yourself how great that pool and beers will be after crossing the finish line. were routing for ya!

Posted: 15-May-2012 12:04:39 PM

Hey Aaen, Very inspirational, stay strong and keep it up! A couple words to give you an extra push when you feel like the hotel might be a better spot to be.. When fatigue gets tired, When agony doubles over in pain, When defeat has waved its flag, ... I will remain Good Luck!

Posted: 15-May-2012 10:51:08 AM

Keep it up Aaen!! If anyone can do this, it is you! I have been following the progress...so impressed! Stay healthy and come home in one piece :) And hey, I think a little crazy is necessary on a journey like this...WAY TO GO!!!!!

Posted: 15-May-2012 10:19:02 AM

If your clever wit is still in tact it means you're good to go to keep on trucking. Proud of you!!!!

Posted: 15-May-2012 10:18:07 AM

Stay strong Aaen, we have faith in you. We're staying at the Marriot in Petra, still feeling the effects of the heat, but wish we were still out there trudging with you. Take care of those feet and we'll continue to check your blog to see how you're making out.

Posted: 15-May-2012 10:08:17 AM

Keep going, dude. One step at a time. Think of a catchy tune to keep you going & make you more crazy, like Katy Perry or something. Beer will be in the fridge for your return!

Posted: 15-May-2012 09:51:21 AM

Aaen, you will finish this damn thing moonwalking across the line, you know why? Blake said you couldn't (sorry LD), now you have to get it done so you can get back here and punch him in the face :). I should be a motivational speaker...

Posted: 15-May-2012 09:17:30 AM

Aaen you're doing great, all you have to do is not stop, watch out for the clowns and concentrate on your race, lots of support here, all those trips to Arizona to visit Pete are paying dividends. Stay strong, keep going you'll be there eventually.

Posted: 15-May-2012 08:47:51 AM

Chris, we don't know each other. I'm one of Brian's non-rugby friends. He is as you describe him and has asked all to follow your blog as you continue with the race. All the best mate!

Posted: 15-May-2012 06:18:09 AM

I'm thinking of you every second! I keep waking up every few hours too, but I'm assuming it's not as hard on me ;) Just keep putting one foot in front of another and stay healthy. I miss you more than I thought I would so get moving and get home! I'll have some cold Alpine in the fridge, xoxoxo! Love!

Posted: 15-May-2012 04:22:34 AM

Well, the title of your post cracked me up! Keep on going one step at a time, Aaen. You are totally kicking ass and everyone here is rooting for you!
