13thMay_First race day
13-May-2012 02:03:32 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Dear everyone

Just finished my first day here at wadi rum.... I'll tell you right now that this is THE MOST DIFFICULT thing I've ever done in my life, by far!!! today the course was about 40km... alot of soft sand, some hard sand and dirt road.... a few things I learn immediately: 1) I will not be aggresive in this race... my goal is to survive...I finished today in 8 hour plus.... I targeted 6 hours max originally .. I certainly miscalculated the salt tablets and electolytes I need... originally I packed much less salt tablets -- even when I trained for trailwalker I never needed so much... luckily at the registration bag check, the medical person suggested I take more... so I did... I should be taking one an hour, so I just got enough for the whole race... Guys, it is brutal here... the hottest was 39 degrees and no shade (except at checkpoint) .. so I've decided to let myself take a longer break at checkpoints to eat and rest up, even if it means I'll rank last .... Walking in sand takes so much effort.... each step needs energy ..I'm glad I covered up, otherwise I'd  be in more trouble..... also I didn't bring any pocari and I only have one gel a day..... I'll learn the lesson this time.... I also barely have enough food'... I'm eating more than I expected.... anyways - strategy is to rest up as much as possible when I reach the tent to reserve energy... oh, an inspiration to me: an old japanese lady is only slightly slower than me.... she is so strong!! if she is still going, I should still keep going!!!!

Guys I tell you, desert race is really so tough... I have a lot of respect to all my friends who finished the recent MDS race...

Also, a bit disturbed today, I noticed blood in my urine... I think maybe its dehydration.. I'm not drinking enough or peeing enough.... I went to medical tent immediately and got anti-biotics.... don't worry, they have a good medical crew here... they'll take care of me

so, my strategy from now on is checkpoint to checkpoint... rest and eat enough before I start agin .... I will not aim for time or ranking this time, there is just no way .... but I will try my best to finish!!! I think I'm doing ok :)

Anyways, your strategy is correct - endurance is the key to this race. We all know that when strong as bull YC says "the desert race is really so tough" - it's TOUGH !! Keep going Forever Bull YC !

Hi Irene! Congrats on making it through day 1! It's always toughest on your first one without prior experience. I know you'll finish each day and finish strong. We are all rooting for you back in HK! Make sure you keep safe and healthy. Focus on drinking water and taking care of your feet. I drank water till it came out like water! Listen to the advice of those around you and try to enjoy yourself too. Will keep following and cheering you on!

Irene!!! Babe, fantastic to see you made it to Camp 1! I got back late last night and your race was not finished yet. Checked this morning and haha, your D1 description is like a replicate of my D1 report! Which means I know you will pull through till the end alright :) Slow? No, good timing for first day when you are still trying to figure out the terrain, temperature and elements. You are going head on and you stuck with it! Good on you so keep reminding yourself you are brave and you will get through it. During my race, I too, was in awe of a Japanese lady who was like the Energizer bunny. No matter what terrain or condition, she just kept going. She was a great inspiration. But remember to find your own pace and run your own race and don't get burned out at someone else's race. Blood in urine will go away. One of my tentmates had it and it went away. Eat well, rest well, and enjoy the race, babe! Yep, it may not be easy and you didn't go into it because it's easy. But you will survive, that's the Irene I know! Forget about the ranking. Keep taking those salt tabs and focus on CP to CP, day to day, and everything will work out. Anything can happen and one "slow" day doesn't mean anything. Your bag will get lighter and you will adapt to the conditions and by the time you know it, you will travel like lightning to the end. Will be following your progress and rooting for you from home! Go Irene Go! X

You are brave, Irene! RESPECT RESPECT! Keep strong and hydrated, hun! You will do it :) Don't push yourself too much and finish at your own pace... You are brave enough to do it and that in itself is a huge accomplishment so try to take it slow!!!
