RacingThePlanet: Jordan 2012 Blogs

On the way !!!!
06-May-2012 10:24:27 AM [(GMT+09:00) Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo]

Finally it has rolled around .... After 4 months of training and getting strange stares from people on the train and the streets of Tokyo running around carrying the pack with 13 - 14kg in it .... Then weekends up in the mountains for 30 - 60k hikes it is time to get on the plane and get over to Jordan.

As it draws around the madness of doing my 2nd RTP event after Gobi last year has sunk in !!!! The pain, the blisters, the exhaustion, the heat that I had forgotten about over the year came back as I read over an e mail that I had penned on the Plane on the way back from China to remind myself never to do this again !!!!

However the good memories of the people I met out there, the scenery and the villages we went though. The elation of crossing the line on the long day knowing there was a days rest and only 10k to go was one of the most emotional moments of my life. All of that makes it worth all of the above !!!!

A few lessons learnt from the Gobi race and the expected heat to be early 30s  in Jordan compared to early 50s on a couple of days in Gobi meant the pack weighs in at more reasonable 11kg rather than the 13kg I started with last time.

All the chat amongst the ex Gobi guys (and girls) about security out there .... As there is obviously little that RTP can do with 150 people spread out over 20km of desert on a normal day and 40 - 50k on the long day. The old paranoia kicked in so I will be wearing Japanese Flags on my gear this year rather than the UK  .... I have lived here for 18 years so its not that much of a stretch. Then a colleague pointed out a far side cartoon to me !!!!!

Anyway not much more to do now just get on the flight on Wednesday night and then hope that everything goes well once we are out there !!!!

Harmony, best of luck with the event. "Leave nothing out there" and you can always recover each night. TFS

Harmony, 'the pretending to be Japanese' ruse will probably fail when they ask you to speak it :-). All the best on your yomp, and looking forward to the updates. Cheers, ADJ.

Best of luck mate.....I see there is a Peter Lee running/walking. Backpack full of Davidoff's and 1987 Dom no doubt. The 30° stuff should be a walk in the park......Sumida-gawa was nearer 45° in the summer and no air-con in those cardboard salaryman houses. Looking forward to the updates! Cheers Mental

Why are you competing?
Although Gobi was the toughest thing I have ever
done I had an amazing time and met some great
people. The physical and mental challenge of
friendly competition on the course is countered by
the views and the banter of evenings round the
fire.
