How many toenails will arrive in Jordan with me?
25-Mar-2012 04:18:37 AM [(GMT-07:00) Mountain Time(US & Canada)]

Training is going well, with the exception of the beating my toenails are taking.

I am pretty fortunate that with the exception of missing toenails, my feet are in pretty darn good shape given the mileage I've put on them.  I am lucky that I have never gotten a blister running (I know, don't tempt fate), but of course I will have the blister kit in my pack because it is required, plus you never know!!

My shoes are the Salomon XT Wings, size 9 (I'm only 5'3", so yes, proportionally HUGE feet), but I have lots of wiggle room in the toe box. I've been using the Salomon's for the past 4 years or so, basically since I've taken up Ultra's.  They serve me very well.  Last year I used one pair to get through the Canadian Death Race, 125 km event, and many sections were water and mud a foot deep.  I did no change of socks or shoes and had no blisters   Come to think of it I did my 100 miler in the same pair, but it was a dry course.

I got my Rough Country silk gaiters stitched onto my shoes, courtesy of Shoe Re-Nu at St. Albert Centre mall.  A wonderful family from Lebanon who have been to Jordan several times run the shop, and shared lots of stories about Petra and the Dead Sea.  They did a great job on the shoes but think we are all a little crazy.

I am thinking along the terms of Survivor for this event, and was wondering if I should bring one luxury item and what it would be.  The past 2 years I have solo'd Death Race it has become tradition for me to drag along a little kiddie pool and epsom salts to the motel, along with a selection of toe nail polish, and after the race my friends and I have a pedi party in the parking lot.  I don't think running with a 2kg bag of epsom salts and a kiddie pool strapped to my back is reasonable, plus the time penalties I would incur for using all the hot water for a foot soak wouldn't go over well  However, a little bottle of purple nail polish just might find it's way into my pack...great for covering black toe nails and if you paint the nail beds on one will ever know it's not a real toenail!!

Bio

I worked for 15 years in a corporate setting as an HR specialist. About 6 years ago I decided to take the leap and make a major career change and do what I love and became a personal trainer and health & fitness specialist at the U of A Hospital's employee fitness centre. I am fortunate to work at something that I truly love, which is sharing my passion for health & fitness with others. My success is defined by seeing individuals make lifestyle changes that ultimately make them stronger, healthier people.

Why are you competing?
My reason for running in Jordan is to challenge
myself. I also look at it as an opportunity to
see an amazing part of the world, meet amazing
people from all over the world and take part in an
amazing experience.
