Training, training, training...and only 5 weeks un

Wow, only 7 more weeks!!  When I signed up months ago I had my "list" of things to prepare and over the past few months I think I have my checklist complete!!  My training plan was top  of the list and so far, so good.  It's always my goal to go into an event uninjured (and come out the other side also uninjured) and so far my goal is met!! 

I came off of 4 ultra's last year, all 100km or more (longest was 100 miles in October) so I had a good endurance base.  I recovered, rested and ate my way through November, December and January and then picked up the training again.  

Since mid-January my training has consisted of running anywhere from 40 - 80 km on the weekends, a weighted vest speed workout once per week, a couple of spin classes per week, some core/strength training once or twice / week and usually a couple of easy 2 hour runs thrown in somewhere during the week.  

A few weeks ago, I did a 3 hour run on Friday, 4 hours Saturday and 3.5 hours Sunday (I figure I did around 80km/50 miles over the weekend).  Over the course of those 3 days I ate only food I will have available during the event.  The dehydrated stuff is surprisingly good (or maybe I just got THAT hungry).  All went well, so hopefully the food choices sit well and the calorie intake is high enough (I seemed to get by okay on about 2300 cal each day for the 3 days and wasn't starving!). Next up is a fully loaded pack run next weekend  with a couple of other RTP Jordan 2012 runners.  We are going to load up and head out for a couple of hours, so I can get the feel of running with a 25 lb pack (although I've been told I'll be shuffling, not running!!).  I ordered the RaidLight front pack and have tried it on, fully loaded.  It feels good just standing around in it, however, I figure I better put it to the test in an actual run!!

Tomorrow  I have a 40 km run planned and it looks like it will be in about 20 cm of fresh, fluffy snow (what can I say...it's spring in Alberta!).  I'll just remind myself that running in snow is a great simulation for running in sand.   Only 5 more long runs before the big event, so I definitely have some motivation to get some serious distance on my feet in the next month!!
