RacingThePlanet: Sri Lanka 2016 Blogs

Epic to the end
21-Feb-2016 12:01:36 PM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Well the final run along the beach was breathtaking and each and everyone had smiles on their face as we ran through the finish line at a little fishing village. What a week the storms last night just showed us we are never in charge mother nature makes up her own mine what she wants to do and when but it certainly added to an epic week. Like always we all head off back to our homes but with memories to last a life tent. Thanks tent 7 you sure gave me some laughs when I needed it the most...until we meet again another race another time and place. Sandy

Stage 6
19-Feb-2016 09:45:59 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

I am sitting here with breeze on my back and the most amazing beach view on one side and a lake with crocodiles on the other side..magical except the crocks..ha ha ha. Sat on the beach so isolated and waves pounding in and reflected on the journey way out weighing my expectations blows me away but it was tough brutal and rain and the 100% humidity sore many taken out of the race. But some how this body held up and got me through ever so thankful for that I never take that for granted I my ventures and life. Today was 53km leaving this morning at 7am first along a track then some gruelling kms along bitumen and on elephant watch.   Then off on a trail through farm areas and I saw buffalo, grazing next to the track, peacocks, snakes and monkeys was on my own today through this secti but I had decided to take it all in and enjoy the beauty of the life here..as I went through tiny villages the locals came out on the street and cheered and clapped and even had one with a bucket of water and he poured it over my head so so hot… then after 31 kms came to the beginning of the Kule NP were they took our official time then grouped us up we had 7 in our group and everyone was just getting a set time for this last 23 km of the day as due to all the wildlife we had to stay together and had a vehicle escort and around lots of corners special service guys all on watch for wildlife getting too close.  In to camp we finally come all of us spent and so happy to be here knowing tomorrow 4km along the beach and the finish line. Proud to say that both male and female winners both Aussies …go the aussies ..as usual ran with and meet some amazing people all on a journey some their dreams shattered others found strength they didn’t know they had but all of us lined up at  the start line that in itself is victorious as all had courage to give it a go whatever the outcome. Lots more to sum up when I get back to motel tomorrow. Thank you all for following my journey and must say I have laughed and cried at some of the comments and emails. To all the family love you heaps talk soon and Col glad you got my email sent another very excited one  more sleep we get to talk and thank goodness Friday night shopping is over…ha ha ha..woot hoo…. Nearly back in your arms….xxxxx

Stage 5
18-Feb-2016 02:23:43 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Hot hot hot rain rain rain mud mud..water every where and wet feet. Suns up some of the day. Wasnt long before we started and the heavens opened and we were drenched humid so high you ar either wet from that  rain. Tent leaked last night brought memories back from Atacama Col and Caroline and Garreth Dent who remember you so well from there we spoke about that and the lightening storms. We have three gone from our tent so sad all could not continue its tough out here and the jungle presents its problems in amongst its beauty it is dense and the humidity is a killer. I mentally felt challenged today but had a good day today started out really slow and just plodded ticked over the first 20 km in my own little head space there was a group of about 5 of us spread out but in and out of sight which through the jungle is a nice feeling. Was nice to have another female in that group too Jax is a strong runner and trying to do all 5 deserts... big committment... anyway last 10km was so hot and i could feel myself over heating so it was walk so many minutes then run...well shuffle really and continue I had someone about 1km in front and as i walked up the hill to one of the volunters in the truck cheering me on she tells me they just had an elephant cross the road... didnt see it by one ,inute boy was i relieved funny part was at that point we were running/walking on a roah wee cars were driving wow never expected that. As i came off that road onto a track here is all these 4 wheel drives and a volunteer telling me they were sending groups of runners together for the 1.5km to camp with a 4 wheel drive as an escort as there were sloath bears sighted near the track...say what,, at that point i was tied but just wanted to get in feeling very emotional... felt awful as kept slower down the competitor I was with but we got in safely and all i wanted to do was get out of the heat. Linda in great spirts had her feet attended too and love her comment ... next time we are renting the DVD. I laughed as was thinking that too...Just chatting to Riitta and she has told us of the 54km tomorrow 30km odd is timed and to the start of Kule NP then when we get there we will wait and they will send us off in groups of 7 to 10 competiors depending on speeds with an escort truck. lots of animals so they are there in case any come to close to us. Also there is no checkpoints so water ect is in the vehicle and we get a set time for the group we are with so should b good. should be nice and relaxed and Jax the girl in 2nd place and me have decided to run together so will be good. Hope I get out of my silly emotional headspace. Knowing tomorrow is realy the last day before I can talk to family makes me feel good. Col miss you like crazy told them not doing another unless you and me both can come ... only a couple more sleeps I can hear your voice and another then i am on a plane home...wot hoo. until then i will hold it together and what will be tomorrow will be... thanks all for comments feel very privilaged to hav wonderful friends and family... big hugs,,, Col check yor emails hope what i sent worked.. 1435 Col xxxx

Stage 4
17-Feb-2016 03:36:12 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

In at camp and its raining and humid and have my noodls to have them to bed. all my gear is wet as had a river crossing up to waist and i slipped on a rock and fell in..oh dear just as well its hot and humid although nothing will dry. The morning started with us on a gravel road out of camp the heat was intense as no shade so kept the fluids up the had an extra checkpoint today so was able to get lots of water. We went through a jungle area in the second half were ther were elephants not hat isaw any and were asked to stay with another competitoe and not to be on or own. there was an elecric fence to keep them to the side we werent rnning but were told the do get out. Not sure if anyone saw any b al god withme to see none. the rain belted down  me at one stage and refreshed me to geinto camp. I just zone out in my own headspace and just wanted to get in as it was through villags and on and off old gravel roads. Col miss you heaps was chattng to your pictre today. Cant wait to have phone on satuday and ring you and hear your voice. thanks all for coments feel a bit flat at moment so cheered me up. time to listen to my ipod tucked up in bed..Col 1435...xx big hugs to all the family.
