The Long March
09-Aug-2013 03:13:53 AM [(GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore]

Physically and mentally one of the toughest days of my life. 100km/hr winds, cold driving rain for over 13 hours and the misfortune of spending all of that the time with Jon and Tommy. We plugged away step after step, listening to the sound of Tom dragging his injured left foot across gravel roads, moss covered rocks, black sand beaches, beachside cliffs and much more for 65 painful to kilometers. An amazing effort from Del Potchy.

Today we are sitting around waiting for the final stage tomorrow followed by stupid amounts of food and booze.

Thanks for the support and looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Day 4
07-Aug-2013 07:10:25 AM [(GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore]

A tough day that started with a run across more dangerous moss covered rocks and then we went through a lava tube, which was a 300m natural tunnel. the first checkpoint was very tough terrain which put a lot of strain on achilles and calves. Not long after checkpoint 1, Tommy was having ankle trouble and decided to walk only to prevent further injury. Being the good friend I am, I immediately hot footed it off down the trail to checkpoint 2. I was feeling really strong until half way towards CP3 when I ran through a muddy puddle and saturated my feet with water and mud.
CP3 to the end was hellish. Up and down over hills on rocky trails. Inevitably with 5km to go, my ITBs decided enough was enough and I had to carefully walk to the end, finishing in just over 6 hours.
The camp is in a nice spot, but its bloody freezing and windy, and my shoes are still wet and muddy. I can't see any way of drying them by the morning, where 65km of pain lie ahead of us; and unfortunately the weather report is not promising.
Looking forward to getting back to civilisation and a warm bed.
Day 3
06-Aug-2013 03:43:35 AM [(GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore]

Ran with the wind of 1000 camels behind our backs today, and sauntered in a little under 6 hours.
The morning started with a 1.5 hr bus trip to the start line after which there were some desperate individuals jumping off the bus the second it had stopped to relieve themselves. Amazing not 20 cent though. He must have left his night bag connected.
Another near gender crisis when one of the desperate individuals appeared to be baking a loaf right next to the bus. Fortunately it turned out to be a female competitor (and just #1s) who just was too desperate to move far away from the bus.
Despite running for near 6 hours, I still couldn't think of anything decent to write so I had to resort to the potty talk above.
On a serious note, the scenery was amazing and most of the course consisted of volcanic ash / sand trails and rocky tracks. There were a few small treacherous sections where a thick layer of spongey moss concealed the volcanic rocks below, but fortunately these were short-lived.
The camp tonight is on a ridge over looking a huge lake. Very spectacular.
No further updates on the crackers. 2 well behaved individuals today. Yew!
Tune in for more potty talk in tomorrow's edition.
Day 2
05-Aug-2013 04:30:45 AM [(GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore]

Crazy wind today. I've never run in anything like it. There were two head injuries due to falls on windy sections, so TH and I did well to stay out of trouble.
We ran with Jon for 2 check points and discussed, amongst other things, the teachers we hated at Cottesloe Primary School. Its fair to say I was a little out of my depth at that point in time.
Check point 3 was at the top of a steep, high mountain after slogging through a river bed that probably doubles as a wind tunnel when tormenting RTP competitors. It was windy and bloody freezing. Over the backside of the mountain the course followed a lake across from a glacier, and we ran on black volcanic ash for the first time.
Lots of blisters but otherwise in pretty good shape. Looking forward to spooning with Mo tonight. I figure I may as well sleep my way to the top if I can't get there on my own two feet.
Not much else to say, except that Tylenol and Jatz go well together.
Thanks for the emails and comment. Love it.
Stage 1
04-Aug-2013 01:46:26 AM [(GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore]

After a freezing, wet & windy night at Camp 1, the course director decided to modify today's course due to the conditions. This meant that a wide river crossing was avoided and we ran the entire 44km stage on a dirt track, which wasn't technically challenging but there was quite a lot of 4WD traffic on track.
Tom and I were doing well until the final 7km which was 100% uphill and seemingly never ending. We walked this section and finished in ~5 hrs 30 mins, a whole 2 hours behind the leaders.
No major blisters yet, although definitely a few hot spots developing on the toes. The first taste of the rehydrated high calorie meals was a highlight as usual. I have another 10 to look forward to forcing down.
Tom had his first TH moment of the trip - mistaking a female competitor for a male competitor... very confusing with a beanie & sunglasses on, or so he says.
I've run out of stuff to say.
Packed any ready to go
03-Aug-2013 01:54:49 AM [(GMT-01:00) Azores]

Pack weighed in at 10kg. A bit of a mad scramble to get everything ready in time, but looking forward to getting started tomorrow morning!
