CONCLUDED 10 AUGUST
NEXT ROVING RACE: MADAGASCAR 2014

RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013 Blogs

And so it's done...
14-Aug-2013 10:44:56 AM [(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time(US & Canada); Tijuana]

"At the end of the day, we can endure far more than we think" - Frida Khalo
What an Epic adventure! It is SO hard to assimilate all the experiences of the week, let alone articulate any of them. I don't think anything can prepare you perfectly for one of these events. Despite all the training the weather showed it's hand and created conditions that I might have run away from ... I dug deeper than ever before and maintained a happy spirit throughout.
The event was made special by the people - meeting people from all over the world that are just as nuts as you to want to go marching across 250km of Icelandic Wilderness is life-affirming.
Will I do one of these again? You betcha!!
OMG - Stage 5 complete!!!
09-Aug-2013 03:19:25 AM [(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time(US & Canada); Tijuana]

I cannot begin to describe the sense of accomplishment I feel after traversing the  Icelandic landscape for 240km!

Today is a rest day in camp and its so nice to relax and catch up with fellow competitors. The last few days have been awesome. We hadso much thrown at us. The weather was nice only for one, the rest of the time howling wind and for the long stage loads of sideways rain. We scrambled through a lava tube, climbed over lava rocks and ran on a black sand beach. There were many times I felt super grateful for all the bootcamp training as well as the hill climbing! So many thoughts over the miles!

I will write more when i get back to the hotel but in the meantime, thank you so much for the messages and all the positive thoughts, they got me this far and tommorrows 10k is really just a formality.

Right now though i am so stoked to have come this far. What an epic journey!!
Stage 2 complete...yay!
05-Aug-2013 06:33:07 AM [(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time(US & Canada); Tijuana]

Today was a tough day. The wind did not stop overnight and this morning the rumor around the camp was that it reached -2c last night...it was cold and did not make for a solid sleep. This morning even though the wind was hectic, it was on our backs whhich made for a fun time running. After the first few miles though we headed straight into a headwind and it stayed like that until we passed the glacier. The scenery continues to be mindblowingly beautiful and I stayed in a ridiculously good mood all day. We are now at camp 3, today we learned that about 10 people have dropped out already. I am still intact and having a good time after 2 days of running 28 miles each day. One third down!!
Stage One – DONE!
04-Aug-2013 05:03:30 AM [(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time(US & Canada); Tijuana]

So Stage One is complete … it’s really hard to describe today, when we got to camp one last night we were greeted by a howling wind and lots of fog in the hills so at the race briefing this morning we were informed that there had been a change to the course to the inclement weather. In a way this was a good thing, we had much less elevation to deal with but it did mean that we ran Stage One on jeep track which was a little boring at times but the scenery made up for it. The glacier is really quite beautiful. The other thing that was unique about today is that the wind did not stop for one second! We started the day running/hiking into a head wind but after the first few miles the wind changed direction and it was much easier to run with the wind at your back. I’m a little tired from today but I’m hoping for a good sleep tonight and that Stage Two brings us a little less wind … but I’ll take whatever comes. This place is magic after all!
It's almost go time!!!
03-Aug-2013 07:21:02 AM [(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time(US & Canada); Tijuana]

Finally at the hotel in Reykjavik with hundreds of other runners from about 40 nations all around the world.
Had a final "real" dinner last night with some fellow competitors and found the company of runners really enjoyable. Everyone is talking about gear and other runs they have done as well as the usual pre race nervousness everyone seems to have is definitely in the air.
The weather is on everyones minds. It could be cold and wet on some days but it is nevertheless going to be great - we'll take what we get, nothing we can do once we're in it. Gear is on everyones mind as well, so much planning and packing and making sure there is enough food for the seven days. Making sure to take out anything that is not essential so there is no "extra" weight is quite daunting but I am getting good at it.
After runner check in and the mandatory gear check, we will drive for about four hours to Camp One from where we will start the first stage. (this is the first 28 miles) ... Next update will be from the course!
