Time is flying!
05-May-2013 07:32:35 AM [(GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna]

Yikes, 91 days to go.

First of all, the fundraising is set up and after receiving the first donations, is donor validated as well. BIG thank you for donations so far!

In the last few weeks I’ve done a few walks near Amsterdam (they call them hikes, but there are no ridiculous hills and it’s mostly on concrete, no bush bashing) with varying results. I took part in the 30km Zandvoort walk, which started with ~8km walking along a boulevard and beach straight into really strong wind. Needless to say I think we felt every single grain of sand that was thrown at us and I’ve decided I’m definitely getting some gaiters! The amount of sand in my shoes (inov-8 Roclite 268’s) was atrocious. This walk was about 5-6 weeks ago now and I was still trying to get sand out last week.

The end result of the sand was a blister almost an inch in diameter under the ball of my left foot, which felt like my foot was being shredded (when I finally got to see it, it barely looked like anything was there, just an inch-wide bump… It was just really bad placement!). The pain from that made me unconsciously put more weight on my right foot, which ended up with what felt like a stretched tendon on the outside of the sole of my foot. I was definitely walking funny for the last 5km of that. I don’t think I noted it down, but from memory I had a ~5kg pack.

More recently I did the Rode Kruis Bloesemtocht, or Red Cross Blossom Walk. I was originally planning on giving the 40km a go, but other commitments (and public transport failure) meant I cut back to the 25km (“25km” actually turned out to be 26km as later stated on the website, and 28km as tracked by the gps on my phone…) and joined some friends for a nice day out. I was a bit concerned about the pain in my left foot from the last walk, especially as this one was almost entirely on paved surfaces, but I’ve concluded that that pain was related to the blister and my walking funny as a result, because apart from general foot/leg weariness, there was no pain at all. Considering the blister and pain happened before the 16km mark on the Zandvoort walk, I see this as a good sign. I felt like I definitely could keep going for a while longer without too many problems. My pack for this walk was 7kg.

I also gave the Den Haag half marathon a go. I was quite pleased with the result – slow (~2:30), but I finished with no aggravation of the IT band in my right knee, and minimal pain in my left knee. This was my second half marathon attempt – the first was the Amsterdam half in 2011, which was incredibly painful with both IT bands being severely aggravated. Hopefully all the exercises from my physio will help kick that once and for all – I might not run much of Iceland as I think more time will be needed to build up my knees again, but hopefully I should be able to get a few kilometers in per day, at least.

Anyway, training thoughts aside, I'm currently in Israel for a conference. This included about 5 hours walking around the Old City in Jerusalem on a tour = time on my feet = training, right? Heh.

Bio

I am currently working on a PhD in marine micropaleontology at VU University Amsterdam. I study microfossils to reconstruct past ocean environments. I have had a go at a shorter adventure race/orienteering events and runs, but this will be my first attempt at an event of this length/magnitude.
