Why do this???
27-Jan-2016 01:33:42 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Maybe you can relate… or maybe not.

My friends never believe me when I say I’m not a competitive person. But I’m not.

Don’t get me wrong; I love sport, exercise and being active. I love a challenge and chasing goals. And, yes, I love to learn new skills. And I'll put in a great deal of effort when doing any of these...

But I really don’t care about winning and competition and bravado.

So, with that said, why would one contemplate, let along go out and participate, in an individual event that is part of what’s regarded as “the most prestigious outdoor footrace series in the world”?

Yeah, I’m still trying to work out why I did that… I don’t have an articulate answer unfortunately.

(And maybe YOU don’t need one either…)

I was actually looking at how I could volunteer for the Roving Race: Sri Lanka… and I somehow got talked into “giving it a go”…

The awesome photos and videos from previous events certainly peaked my desire to see amazing landscapes… but you can do that on any travel holiday…

The backgrounds and stories of some of the participants and staff are more than inspiring… but amazing people and life stories can be found anywhere these days…

The idea of carrying 7 days worth of food and items whilst exercising NEVER appealed to me… but the idea of surviving and minimising life to the essentials did (OK, I would have preferred 4-5 days to be honest!)…

I was curious how people could endure such an event, but that’s why I was more interested in volunteering than participating…

Maybe the event was a good little package of all the above?

Really, I don’t know. I still don’t know (I’ve been trying to work it out for months!). And I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to explain it…

But I do know a lot of good will come out of the experience (a lot of good has already come out of the training and preparation) and that has been enough to keep me going, for now…

(That, and singing U2’s “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” over and over again…)

With only 15 days until I depart for Sri Lanka, I’ll try and post a few things I’ve tried and learnt in the build up, just so I have a few points of reference to reflect on during and after the event.

(And if you’ve read this far and are unimpressed, just go to the Photo and Video section of the Roving Race Sri Lanka website and do some arm chair travel…)

Excitement or panic... 28 days to go!
17-Jan-2016 10:39:55 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

With just under 4 weeks to go, there is a mixture of excitement and nerves as we tick ever nearer to the start time of Racing the Planet: Sri Lanka. It has been nearly five months since I committed to "participating" (which is how I view this, rather than "competing") in the event and over that time, preparations have encompassed a whole array of things, including:

  • Learning and trying different nutritional substances (including freeze dried meals)
  • Lots of hiking, with an increasingly heavy backpack
  • Integrating other sports / training into my training plan
  • Trying out all sorts of equipment (my favourite kind of shopping!)
  • Trying out all sorts of clothing and shoes (again, yay for shopping!)
  • Learning to enjoy running (still learning how to do this)
  • Self management techniques on my tired / sore body (considering my profession, you would think this would be "easy"...)
  • Learning to pack a backpack (and keep it as light as possible)

I had intended to blog alot more about my preparations, but like many good intentions it fell by the way side without much further action. Thank goodness for New Year's resolutions! Hopefully I can divulge (and potentially bore or amuse you with) a few stories and tips from the past 5 months over the coming weeks, not to mention share the experience of the event as it happens.

My only intention for this blog is to help anyone else contemplating a 4 Desert / Multi-day event, as well as keep friends and family posted on what on earth I am doing. So feel free to cheer, jeer, support or ask any questions along the way. Thanks!

Why are you competing?
I actually wanted to volunteer, but somehow got
