Stage 4 – withdrawn
07-Aug-2013 07:04:39 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Sadly, my race came to an end today. When I got up this morning my ankle was badly swollen from yesterday’s efforts, but I decided to do the first 10km until checkpoint 1 to see if it warmed up and got better. There was also a short section through a lava cave which sounded too special to miss. The terrain was very rough under foot and within minutes of setting off my ankle was throbbing. I took some painkillers, but they didn’t have much effect. At this point I knew it was either going to be a misearble slog for the final 100km, or I was going to choose self preservation and accept defeat. In the end I chose the latter, and I am now focused on giving the legs a rest so that I can bounce back quickly.

Thanks again for all the comments and sorry I was not able to battle through this one. Iceland has been beautiful and brutal all wrapped into one! It’s been another great race and happy to bow out of this one (semi)gracifully. Until the next time..
Stage 3 - over and out....almost
06-Aug-2013 02:47:03 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Today was a difficult day. My legs are really painful and i have tendonitis in my right ankle which is making walking very uncomfortable. The course was 40kms along tracks that at times were rocky and difficult to walk along. It seemed to take forever, but i managed to make it in to camp. I now have my ankle strapped and im going to rest and wait and see how things go tomorrow. For large parts of the day i was resigned to withdrawing, but i do feel better now im back at camp.

On the plus side it was easily the most beautiful day of the race so far, with volcanoes and epic landscapes as far as the eye could see. I did try and enjoy it even though i was really focused on just getting through it. I also had my sigur ros moment as glosli came on the headphones and it was the perfect sountrack to the icelandic landscape in front of me.

For the most part though, today was about survival. I am still in, but only just. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Thank you so much for the comments. I did finally get a chance to read through them all last night, but it was too late to respond. It was great to hear from so many of you and such a boost for me. Thank you and hopefuuly i wont let you down! Mum, Dinah sending all my love and big hug to the kiddos xxxn
Stage 2 - Gone with the wind
05-Aug-2013 06:34:02 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Today was a really tough day. The stage distance was just under 50kms so a long haul with a heavy backpack. What made it really challenging though was the constant strong wind blowing us everywhere. It took me around 10hrs to complete and i only took off my wolly hat for the last 2hrs. The icelandic wind is really strong and cold!

Aside from that i had a tough day with my legs as they were feeling really stiff after yesterdays course. The fist 10mins was particuarly painful, but thankfully they eased up a bit. Still, I was generally feeling pretty sorry for myself for the first few sections. The 3rd section was better as i had a quick snack and some parecetmol, and plugged in some music. Amazing what a difference that makes! It was also the most beautiful stage as we climbed up right by a huge glacier. My good mood lasted a few kms into the next section and then the combination of pain returning to my legs and enless kms of dirt tracks made me retreat into the grumpy tired man i was at the beginning of the day. I was well within the time limit so i just resigned myself to trudging slowly to the finish line. The last section was on a 10km winding road that just went on forever.

Anyway, safely back in camp now and feeling good that i managed to find some reserves to make it through another day. Big love to the family and hello to friends who happen to be reading. Unfortunately i have not been able to read comments of notes yet, but will do so tomorrow. See you then for the next update. Over and out.
Race - stage 1
04-Aug-2013 02:50:40 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

The arrival into camp yesterday was crazy. The drive took 4hrs and we left Reykjavik in sun and arrived in some mountains with freezing conditions, rain and high wind. All of us in the tent wrapped up in all the clothes from our backpacks and didn’t venture outside. I had a suprisingly ok nights sleep despite being zipped up all the way in my sleeping bag.

By the morning conditions hadnt changed much so the intended course (which included a river crossing) was changed to follow the dirt roads that we had come in on. It was a day for the runners and i heard some got some amazing times. I took it easy as i was expecting my body to complain due to the minimal training. It held up well until about 30kms and then my legs started to stiffen. The last 15 or so kms were quite uncomfortable, but i took it slow and im feeling ok now after some light rest and noodles.

We have sun at camp 2 which is great, but rumor has it there’s a weather front moving in, so watch this space. Apparently the weather in Iceland is highly changeable so there may be some more surprises in store. It also stays light until around 11.30pm and gets light already at 4-5am, so not much darkness. This is great for us slow coaches out on the course!

We have a great tent which makes the race that much more enjoyable. We have Lia who came in 1st place for the ladies. Sadly im letting the average down in the tent as i am the slowest!

The scenery is stunning, with some beautiful glacial landscapes and views, (David, ive seen some fantastic rivers too!) but hoping tomorrow will be even more special as we’ll be heading on the trails. Sending a big hug to Greta, thinking of you and hope to see you soon. Love to my family, dinah, anto and viva, miss you all and sending you all my love. Day 1 is done and im still here, day 2 will be tougher so lets see how that goes  xxn
Arrival in Reykjavik
02-Aug-2013 07:24:40 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Arrived in Reykjavik and checked into hotel. We leave for camp tomorrow, so have some time to rest and go over usual backpack admin. Weather outside is lovely and fresh. Bright blue skies. Conditions can change rapidly and it gets very windy, which might make for some interesting days on the course. Apparently it doesn´t get dark until 11pm, which will be great for making late night snacks!

Sending lots of love to family and friends. Will update as often as I can.
