NEXT ROVING RACE: MADAGASCAR 2014

Block week/end
30-Jun-2013 11:55:43 AM [(GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria]

We survived – just… Seeing as though we haven’t really been putting in as much time as we should, we thought we’d do a bit of a block – a few consecutive days of running. We ran Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday – with our packs. Managed to clock 13.5hrs in total, so was pretty happy. It wasn’t the most pleasant experience for me as I was fighting a bladder infection that I just couldn’t shake. Probably not the best idea to keep going, but I just thought if I didn’t get this block in, then I would be really bleak as time is running out. I survived, but it was quite a slog for me – not so much due to the running, but just the pain and discomfort. My legs were willing, my cardio side of things was willing, but my body was just struggling with energy. Anyway, I am glad I did it and I can tick it off the list. The pack isn’t bothering me much at all any more – in fact, I prefer it heavier, as it sits nicely. The only thing that hurts a bit are my knees – feel like a granny (sorry Mom, a really old granny). We’ll do another, bigger block in about 2 weeks time and then that will be the end of the big runs done – what a frightening thought! 35 days to go…
Fisherman's Double
18-Jun-2013 06:58:37 AM [(GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria]

It has been a while since I’ve written, but I guess that is because life happens and there are so many things going on – Iceland just being one of many. Training is going alright, but we just don’t seem to be getting in the necessary long runs, which is a bit of a worry. We have 47 days to go – I really cannot believe how the time has flown! Running with the pack doesn’t seem to be too much of an issue and I am up to about 9kgs. It’s fairly comfortable, but there is quite a bit of tweaking that needs to be done. The only, somewhat impressive thing I have done, is to do the Fisherman’s Double – doing the 22km race and then running back. It came at a stressful time in our family, as John’s Mom passed away unexpectedly. He went out to Bali, where she lived, so didn’t do the race with me. I didn’t feel full of energy at the beginning of the day but just knew I needed the space out in the mountain and the time on my legs. Linda and I started together and we took it really easy up Blackburn Ravine and were pretty much at the back of the pack. We were both carrying loads, mine was 8.5kgs. The weather was cold and rainy, but I don’t mind that too much. At the top of Blackburn it was hailing and I lost Linda somewhere, so I just carried on and enjoyed getting past some people and feeling what it was like to ‘race’ with my pack. I really enjoyed it, I moved easily and the pack didn’t bother me too much. Once we had finished the race, we got ourselves together and got going back to Hout Bay. It was very touch-and-go at that point, as everything was telling me to just get a lift back. It was freezing and the prospect of heading back into the mountains, into the cold was not appealing. Anyway, off Linda, Langley and I set. I have to say it was a bit of a slog for me and I just wanted to get it over and done with. My pack was weighing more heavily on me, as well as my emotions – I just needed to get back to my kids and I also desperately wanted to talk to John. When you’re used to running with someone, even if we don’t run together all the time, just the fact that he’s out there and near me is comforting, but to know he was miles away and going through a really tough time, was hard for me. About 6h20 of running and we were done! It felt good to have achieved it and to tick the boxes that I needed to tick. Pack for that length of time – tick; nutrition – tick; wet feet for hours on end – tick; gear – tick. One long run of that length is not enough I know, but we’ll try do two more and then that’s it, race day will be here. So many clichés come to mind: “what will be, will be”; “it is what it is” blah, blah, but it’s true, we can only do so much and have a life too. It is only a 250km race in Iceland after all….
