NEXT ROVING RACE: MADAGASCAR 2014

RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013 Blogs

John's update
26-Mar-2013 06:53:40 AM [(GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria]

The last week has been a good running week relative to the last couple. It doesn’t take much to mess with the routine, etc – a few days not feeling great, travel, late client meetings, etc – and the week(s) ends up being a low mileage one. Thankfully last week went well – +/- 70kms under the belt – mixture of trail and tar – and no muscle or knee soreness to speak of. The goal has always been to get to the end of March, reasonably fit, injury free and to use that base to build on in April, May, June when there are a lot more trail events planned. I suppose I can tick that box. The next step(s) will be to ramp up the kms and time out there. I’m not sure the formula, nor do we have a rigid plan but I’m guessing somewhere between 70 – 100km a week with three monthly ‘ block’ weekends will be the idea?? Hope so… Africa X is coming up in April and that will give us a good idea of where we are at so will take those 3 days as an indicator. Right now, running the trails the last week just reaffirmed how much I enjoy being out there. Sunday running leg 2 of trail challenge with a howling wind was super, the road can’t quite compete.
Stressing
12-Mar-2013 06:52:45 AM [(GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria]

Since our good running week, we have done nothing!!! It has been 9 days, yes I’m counting, since we last ran. Last week was just a right off with been a bit hectic and also wanting to save our legs for the Argus Cycle Tour. Well….the tour has come and gone – we are very pleased with our times, considering our cycling has not been on the radar – but now we need to kick into high gear with our running. I am absolutely desperate to get into the mountain and to try out my new Salomon Speedcross shoes. Life is just taking over at the moment and the kids are so busy at school – I am just struggling to find the time. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it is true and I am starting to stress. Reading the blogs and write-ups about the RTP Attacama Crossing this past week, has just added to that stress. RacingThePlanet do not make their races easy – every single stage is challenging – like beyond your imagination or even belief! I sat reading every day what the course was like and I started to really wonder why I have even entered this race. I’m not sure I will ever be ready at this stage and I am totally intimidated by it and by the people who seem to enter these events. Oh well, I guess it’s sacrifice time and a lot of things that were perhaps on the radar or included into our daily / weekly schedules, will have to start falling by the wayside, to ensure we get as much running in as we can. The upside is that I’m eager to get going – I’m sure there will be a time when I just don’t want to put my running shoes on again…
Mini-block weekend
04-Mar-2013 06:52:03 AM [(GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria]

So, it’s Monday and we have survived the little task we set ourselves – completing four days of consecutive running. We are going to do this now and again, just to get our legs – and our minds – used to this idea. We’ve started off very slowly and will obviously build onto the distances. I have to say, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I thought that waking up today and having to run again after yesterday’s very tough run, was going to be unpleasant to say the least. I just did a gentle 8kms and it didn’t feel so bad. All-in-all I / we (well can’t speak for JK because I’m not sure what he has done or is going to do today) ran 54kms in the four days. I have also just checked my log book and I have run 193kms in the last 30 days. Things are picking up and I guess it only gets tougher from here… Ready for the challenge though.

To challenge myself - To experience something that
