RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013 Blogs

My 1st official blog!
31-Jul-2013 06:41:18 AM [(GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria]

Greetings from a sunny but chilly Iceland

If you had asked me a year ago whether I would ever consider running 250km across what in effect constitutes a desert terrain …. I would have almost certainly questioned the sanity of the question! Why is it that I then find myself on an extremely large lump of lava in the North Atlantic Ocean. Well I suppose the answer to that question is reasonably complicated however it is to be said that sanity features nowhere in the answering thereof.

Last year as I hurtled towards my half century I began to think of ways a man could best celebrate his “midlife” (I suppose that should read “late midlife” as I fear my life has been rather interspersed by a number of minor “along the way life crises”). At this juncture it is important to point out the following fact! I am and will always remain at heart a CYCLIST!! Although it is now true to say that I am a cyclist with an addiction for trail running…. Normal trail running that is as opposed to the sort undertaken by the other middle aged Bellairs out there which would be normally referred to as rock climbing (with apologies to my younger brother Sir Tim “Bear Grylls” Bellairs)

About two and a half years ago I realised that riding my bicycle with my close knit group of mates from Vida coffee shop to Vida coffee shop was not helping rid myself of my rapidly expanding half century old stomach. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try a light jog around the block. OK so that was painful and that first 3km run nearly became my last. It was at this point that my damsel in shining armour astride a white horse came galloping down the road ( well in fact into Polana at Kalk Bay Harbour).  Enter my gorgeous and talented partner Nicky Eckstein.

It was Nicky’s passion for running that persuaded me to persist in my endeavours and soldier on with my attempts at becoming a trail runner. It is to be said that 20years of cycling had done nothing for preparing me for the “honest” sport that running is. There were no bunches to hide in, no wheels to draft and sadly now downhills to freewheel. To Nicky and her very special “coven” of friends who have seen me through to this point I cannot begin to express my gratitude sufficiently. It was the wording on a card I received on my 50th birthday from a very close friend that was to become my mantra these last few months as I headed towards this goal that is Iceland 2013. That card remains my mantra and so should it be for all of us, it reads: “ LIFE BEGINS AT THE END OF OUR COMFORT ZONE” – Ja thank you that card it continues to drive me on each day I am so pleased that you and your sister Tina will be with us for that run in Iceland go kick butt girl.

Iceland is to be my challenge …. Stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing myself to places I have never been. The journey this past year has been a tough one and were in not for the patience, love and understanding of my partner Nicky I would never have got this far.

On Sunday I start what will be for me my own personal Everest, 250km across the wastelands of Iceland. I am nervous, extremely nervous but ready for what is coming (I hope). I have decided not to let the opportunity simply be a selfish personal endeavour. Having set myself this goal and commenced with my training Nicky and I have decided that this “midlife crises” of mine should at least have some additional meaning and benefit outside of being our  own personal challenges. We will be using the opportunity to raise much needed funds for The Smile Foundation (http://www.smilefoundationsa.org/), an organisation that is doing unbelievable work in making meaningful changes in the lives of people and whose work we both deeply believe in. Donations to The smile foundation can be made at : http://www.backabuddy.co.za/iceland-2013-for-smile-foundation
