Alpaca Ma Bags

Last day done – a quick 11km jog into the local one horse town, where I managed the usual sprint finish and tasked delicious Ecuadorian Beer and Cheesy Balls. As well as the RTP medal the local one horse mayor also decided to award us with his own one  – albeit they seemed to be left over from a cycling event in July.  Then a mere 5 hour bus journey back to Quito and a 2 hour bath – and I am feeling almost normal apart from a ranging beer thirst and hunger for food I can chew.

I have bagged up my clothes for the week - which are revolting and may set off a toxic waste alert when I pass through the airport tomorrow night.

Many thanks to Tent Mates Budgie and Dom who kept me entertained all week, and put in an excellent performance. Also thanks to the Italian Flying Manzini’s who were great tent mates, as they put up with us without complaint.

Too many highs and lows to go through in detail. And I am still pleased to have found my legs half way through day 5, where I was going so fast downhill the Swiss started to ring cow bells. Body has held up well, with no blisters of note, albeit about 6 black toenails will meet their maker in the next few weeks.

I tell you what – it was a tough race. Never again (maybe…) – and as I said at the start  - I wasn’t going to Quit in Quito.

I will leave you with the lyrics of the famous song Ecuador, by Sash. I will play the tune, and you can sing along :

Dame tu mano!
Y venga con migo!
Vamonos al viaje para buscar los sonidos magicos
De Ecuador!

Escucha me!
Vamonos al viaje para buscar los sonidos magicos
De Ecuador

Stage 6
01-Aug-2015 03:52:16 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Oh Jimmy Jimmy, Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Anderson. Thanks for the update on the Ashes. Rest day in camp before the final short day to the finish line tomorrow – the person behind me is 90 mins back – so I can  amble in. Camp today has looked like a MASH unit – the majority with gruesome feet injuries. I did make it down to the local river for a bath in the mountain waters and most invigorating it was – apart from dropping my soap in the first 30 seconds. Sod it.

I must apologise for the very rude blog of last night – if It made it out via the censors. On the basis of not wanting to shock too many people I will not tell you about the llama, camel and RTP lady who walked into a bar – make up your own punchlines..

On considered reflection , and as the pain is subsiding, Ecuador is an excellent country – mountains, pasties and all. If Julian Assange makes it out of the Embassy he may enjoy his destination.

I must jump, as my tummy is rumbling and my next destination is the black pit of doom that is the toilet – wish me luck.

First beer is 20 hours away..

It's the oxygen, stupid
01-Aug-2015 03:49:24 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

First things first – long day done – huzzah. It started in the usual way for me in this race – just plugging along – grinding through the miles and hills – placed 97 at checkpoint 2. And then as we started to descend – my energy levels soared and legs and lungs started working – and I cracked out the second half in good time – coming in 66th I think. It was the closest I have ever come to the runners high – and now I understand why people say you can get drunk on oxygen – lovely gloopy thick yummy oxygen – I vow to live near sea level in the presence of lots of it. The runners high was further enhanced by a magical sunset as we were coming down from the mountains into the jungle – clouds below you, sun light reflecting.

Message to William – Happy Llama, Sad Llama, Mentally disturbed Llama, Big Fat Mama Llama, Goose. And no, I have not been drinking too much CoCa Tea – W will understand. Message to Shazz – hope u had a good anniversary – a meal  out when I return (with a pint of Tribute for me).

Since my only remaining shaggy stories are rude then can aged parents and children avert your eyes..

There is a young German couple* running the event who fell out in a most unfortunate circumstance. As usual Hilda was way ahead when Axel came across the mangled remains of a large south American flightless bird – with delight he picked up the morsels of meat and rammed them inside a piece of intestine – as a bratwurst treat around the camp fire. Things did not go as planned. As Axel entered the tent, meat in hand, shouting – “tonight Hilda you vill have Rhea* Sausage”

*No similarity to persons dead or alive. Nor indeed South American birds – who live a little south of Ecuador.

And so to tomorrow – a rest day – and Saturday little 11km run in. Looking forward to getting it done and seeing you all
