Stage 4
30-Jul-2015 04:22:58 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

Just a quick update, we made it through Stage 4, the most epic stage of the race!!! We got in to camp pretty late and I can wait to have some food and bed. The day started on the valley floor with river crossings and trails, followed by the most epic climb ending at the highest point of the race. Words just won’t do it justice, you will have to look at the photos, this lake in the crater of a massive volcano is impressive, we walked around the crater for 6km then descending via sand dunes to camp.
I was feeling great today, even had a little run, I still stuck with Nicky and Allister which were going a bit slower due to knee injuries, so I would just run ahead and wait for them. Much more fun than being alone on the course.
That’s all from me, lots of love to everyone and thank for the messages xxxx

Stage 3
29-Jul-2015 04:36:53 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

I have completed another stage!!! We made it in to Camp 3 just before dark, it is a beautiful  campsite surrounded by mountains, I will have to have a proper look around tomorrow. Today’s run was epic, we ran/walked (mostly walked) 30km along the Inca trail, some very terrifying descents, hard on the knees and hips. We climbed very steep hills as well. I am feeling great on the climbs, all the work at Joe’s Basecamp has paid off, dragging that damn sled and squatting ridiculous weights has made all of this easier.

Tomorrows stage looks epic, very steep climbs and descents so hopefully my body miraculously recovers overnight. No more chest pain which is reassuring, I have blisters on every single toe and just ignoring whatever is covered in tape, denial is the cure to blisters at the moment, unfortunately very painful to walk on. My salvation are my trekking poles, I don’t think I will ever leave the house without them.
G thinking of you every step I take, cursing you sometimes for convincing me this was a great idea, but enjoying every moment and taking in all the magnificent views just for you xxxx
Thank you everyone for you messages of support, it is lovely to come in to camp absolutely shattered and hear you are all following from afar xxx

Stage 2
28-Jul-2015 04:34:29 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

I made it in to Camp 2 just before dark. It was a very long day, a very steep climb following checkpoint 1 and the altitude seems to have affected most of the competitors. Luckily I have been adopted by team South Africa and spent the whole day with Nicky and Allister. I think if I was on my own I would of certainly joined the volunteers today. The trails are absolutely amazing, steep climbs and scary descents, I have been feeling the altitude and have had to loosen the chest strap on my backpack as my chest pain was getting really bad. Gareth don’t worry I got the doc to check me out and I do not have a pulmonary embolism just musculoskeletal pain. I really appreciate everyone’s messages of support, tomorrow is a new day and another climb. Matt and Lucy I have been thinking of you all day, I hope everything went well with the arrival of baby Spargo. Lots of love xxxx

Stage 1
27-Jul-2015 06:34:36 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

I have made it in to Camp 1 and it had been an epic stage. Really long day 48km stage with a very heavy backpack (13kg), it was really difficult to run with such a heavy pack, I did manage to shuffle down the hill before Checkpoint 1 and catch a few people, but from then on I just walked at a brisk pace. I was really lucky to find Nicky and Alister (the most lovely South African couple) at Checkpoint 1 and stayed with them for the rest of the day. We moved at quite a brisk pace and did not stop until we got to camp.It has been a day of readjusting gear, wardrobe malfunctions, blisters and long dusty roads. We had the most beautiful view of Cotopaxi volcano following us and walked through several villages with very supportive locals.I’m feeling shattered, a bit of chest pain (musculoskeletal) and very sore feet. I will see how I wake up in the morning and I guess just get going for stage 2.I am off to eat my delicious freeze dry meal xxx

I have arrived in Quito!!
22-Jul-2015 11:12:01 AM [(GMT-05:00) Bogota, Lima, Quito]

I have arrived in Quito after my 36hr flight and it is raining! This dampens my race preparation and I have begun to panic, do I have enough warm clothes? Will I be able to fit everything in my bag? Will I need an extra warm layer? Agh so much to think of.
I have to find a positive if it is going to rain all week, there is one mad person that would love it. Gareth loves running in the rain, he would be that crazy person that purposely goes out running once it starts raining and he would say to me "some people walk in the rain, some people just get wet" so I will have to embrace it rain, hail or shine.
It has been lovely to arrive in Quito and catch up with the RTP crew. I had a great day touring Quito with Tony and Bev. You can certainly feel the altitude walking around. When we landed I immediately felt the thinner air, I'm not sure if it's the jet lag or just pure exhaustion but it makes a difference and I am yet to find out how I will possibly run without becoming absolutely exhausted. I guess I have the next few days to acclimatise and become used to it.
I keep looking at my unpacked bag and that will be my first major challenge for this race, I just have to fit it all in.
To pack extra socks or another pack of chocolate tinny teddies?
