RacingThePlanet: Ecuador 2015 Blogs

The End
02-Aug-2015 12:26:54 PM [(GMT+12:00) Auckland, Wellington]

250kms later and it's the end! Apologies for missing yesterday's blog but we had technical issues. Here we are now in Quito 7days after starting and we're all in one piece. Naturally there's a few issues but nothing serious and nothing that won't repair. Team NZ have scorched it (which means we reached the finish line!). The Big March was a big day out in the field and we got into camp 5 at around 11pm battered and bruised but across the line nonetheless. The team worked like a machine ... There hasn't been a harsh word spoken and we've been perfectly synchronised. For some it may be hard to imagine how 5 independent thinking men can work as such a tight team but it worked for us. We were tighter than an All Black scrum! This morning was just a casual 11km to the finish line and once again we crossed the line shoulder to shoulder and to great applause from the crowd (that means everyone else who finished before us today which was most of the field!) 5 hour bus ride back to Quito - stinking, feeling the pain but proud to have finished what was a massive adventure. Tonight is the awards evening then we part ways tomorrow morning - Charlie, Kim and me to Beverley Hills for some r&r, James back to the UK and Hamish staying in Quito until Monday then home to NZ. Thanks to all for following our trip, we hope you've all had as much fun as we had. Team NZ are Free To Run - we ran this race for our own pride satisfaction and enjoyment but we also ran it for all those women around he world who aren't free to run - may the world change for the better and may all of humanity share equal rights to running and sports in general. Tim, Charlie, Kim, James and Hamish.

Checkpoint 1
19-Aug-2014 05:36:47 AM [(GMT+12:00) Auckland, Wellington]

These blogs will, for me, serve as checkpoints along the way as I countdown to Ecuador 2015. No doubt they will be random and irregular in contrast to my training! We are now a contingent of 4 and soon to be 5 - running with me in my team will be Charlie Cooper (aka Super Cooper) and Jon Merwood (when he finally gets around to entering!). Also joining us but probably running their own race due to their age and ability advantage will be Kim Hughes and James Spence. In addition to making it to the finish line we will be raising money to support "Free to Run" - a charity founded by Stephanie Case - which aims to enable women living in conflict zones to enlarge their life experiences through sport (primarily running) programs www.freetorun.org Having experienced my own personal growth through a late introduction to running, I can't think of a better cause from which change will be sure to follow. A little like an ultra marathon .... one small step after another .... in the case (pun unintended!) of "Free to Run" it will be one small change after another to make the world a better place. My training is solely focused on rebuilding my base after a couple of months of 'fattening up'. To do this I'm mostly training with a Crossfit Endurance program with a little running mixed in for good measure. For those that are interested - Crossfit forms the foundation of our training with the focus on developing core strength and short muscle twitch extension ... from this base comes endurance. We have successfully employed this regime for all of our previous events. I've also scheduled a couple of training runs in the lead up to Ecuador - Auckland marathon November 2014, Kepler Challenge December 2014, Motatapu off road marathon March 2015 - these should all help me keep my focus on the end goal. For now it's back to the training treadmill ....
