Stage 4
30-Jul-2015 03:40:52 AM [(GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi]

DAY 4 in the bag but what a painful bag it was. I know I’ve written a few times about the strength of the team but today was a true test. There’s always one who is down at any given time and today it was me! My feet are beyond repair and each step of the 40km we ran today was akin to walking on needles. I was unwilling to hold up the team but after a quick discussion we took a bit of weight out of my pack and the boys spread it between them to lessen the impact of my footfalls – made a huge difference but it was an agonising day. After following a narrow foot trail along a river bed we climbed an incredibly steep trail to emerge on a vast plateau with views that went on forever. The Ecuadorian farmers seem to till every accessible piece of land they can lay their hands on – some incredibly steep sections with potatos growing. The next highlight was a long winding climb up to the craters edge of Lake Quilatoa at almost 4000m above sea level. The air was thin to breathe and made the climb really tough but of course then came the downhill. The views made it well worthwhile (there’s sure to be some pics on the website …. Check them out!) Then followed a long slog home around a dirt road to a small village (name unknown to me). Medics have attended to our feet and we’re looking for an early night before the long march tomorrow. Thanks again for all your messages – access to computer is tricky but the team know about all the support from home. The finish line is in sight but we have the biggest day yet to come! From Charlie, James, Kim and Tim
