The secret's in the skirt

The secret’s in the skirt
By Simon Penn

Tim McCosker reckons he has an unfair advantage over the competition in RacingThePlanet: Australia 2010 - the little black skirt he’s been sporting since the start of the event.

“It’s great, you get a bit more air under there – I think the girls have it great,” he laughs, lining up for the start of stage four. “I just have to practise my Scottish accent.”

Tim is racing with team Saigon Children’s Charity and the skirt has earned an extra $10,000 for needy kids in Vietnam.

Tim and his teammates Andy Randall, Stephen Thompson and Chris Lunn last raced together in the Gobi March in 2007 when they raised $60,000. They’ve reached that same figure this time around and hope to have gone well past it by the time the event is over.

Andy says the average daily income for two working parents in rural Vietnam is $1 a day. The charity works by compensating the children’s families for what they would earn if the children were sent to work in the fields, as is the common practice.

“We like children’s charities and that whole concept of breaking the poverty cycle by educating them,” Andy says.

“I’ve been there and it’s great. One of the things they do, a very simple way of raising money, is to give cameras to the kids to take photos of rural life around Vietnam and the pictures then get framed and sold all around the world.”

Stephen says the charity also provides vocational training for the children to help them find employment.

“The charity also builds schools, and has lots of ways of getting the kids to school and keeping them there,” he says.

And for a final word on Tim’s unique attire, the million dollar question is “what does a RacingThePlanet competitor wear under his kilt?” … well, that’d just be telling now, wouldn’t it.
