RACE CONCLUDED 6 SEPTNEXT ROVING RACE ECUADOR - JULY 2015
Salvo has a Treble Chance
Salvo’s Treble Chance
By Dave Flanagan

True champions are modest about their achievements, never taking success for granted. As winners they know they’re in the sights of every contender out there, but being hunted is what keeps their own hunger for victory so keen.

And there’s no doubting who the prey is for RacingThePlanet: Australia 2010. Spain’s Salvador Calvo Redondo, or Salvo as he’s known, will go into the race on the back of two successive RacingThePlanet roving event wins, in Vietnam 2008 and Namibia 2009.

But although the 47-year-old cautiously admits he’d like to win in Australia and make some history, he’s aware there are several experienced competitors in the field who will be doing their best to spoil his party.

“There are always people who are more prepared, “says Salvo, currently training for the Kimberly by skiing around the mountains near his San Andres del Rabanedo home. “Every day new and very good runners are appearing and they won’t make it easy. I will train to be prepared and do all that’s possible to get a good result.”

What makes the competitive element of Australia 2010 particularly exciting is the fact Salvo stays off the RacingThePlanet competitive radar for most of the year, choosing to focus only on the roving events, rather than the 4 Deserts. It’s an approach that suits his sponsorship budget and personal schedule and he likes the “exoticism” of the one-off locations too. But it also makes judging his form hard for rivals.

I wait for this race impatiently,” adds Salvo. “I have run in all continents of the world, except Oceania and for this reason the race is special for me. Finally, I will complete one of my dreams, which is to run in all parts of the world. I have seen the place where the race will be carried out and think it is spectacular. I hope to enjoy the landscapes.”

And we hope to enjoy some epic competitive action.
