  • RacingThePlanet: Jordan 2012 starts on 13 May 2012
  • Jordan is the fifth location for the RacingThePlanet roving race series which moves to a new location each year. Previous locations included Vietnam, Namibia, Australia and Nepal.
  • The event will start in Wadi Rum, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia and his Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and will travel through four different deserts to finish at the World Heritage Site of Petra.
  • The terrain will include sand (hard packed, soft sand and some dunes), gravel / dirt roads and will cross a salt lake.
  • Temperatures on the course are expected to around 25-30C during the day and could reach as low as 0C / 32F at night.
  • 200 competitors from more than 40 countries will take part in the event.
  • Roughly 80% of the competitors will be male and 20% female.
  • Approximately 20% of competitors run the entire course, 60% combine running with walking, and 20% walk the entire course. The fastest completion time is expected to be around 26 hours and the slowest around 70 hours.
  • RacingThePlanet: Jordan is a self-supported race; competitors must carry everything they need for the seven days on their back. The average backpack will weigh 9 kilograms / 20 pounds.
  • Competitors use Intel ruggedized laptops in a specially designated Cybertent to write blogs and exchange emails during the event.
  • During RacingThePlanet: Jordan 2012, competitors, volunteers and staff are expected to consume more than 25,000 liters of water over the seven days of the event.
  • Competitors are required to pass through up to 30 checkpoints throughout the seven-day event before crossing the finish line.
