1: What is RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013?
RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013 is part of RacingThePlanet's Roving Race Series. There is one race each year which takes place in a new location. The first Roving Race took place in Vietnam in 2008, followed by Namibia in 2009, Australia in 2010Nepal in 2011 and Jordan in 2012. RacingThePlanet: Iceland is the sixth edition of the Roving Race Series. In 2014 this event is set to be in Madagascar in August.
2: What is the format of RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013?
RacingThePlanet's Roving Races follow the same format as the prestigious 4 Deserts Series. They are 250 kilometer / 155 mile, 7-day, 6-stage rough-country, endurance footraces through the most stunning and culturally rich places on earth. The races are self-supported which means that competitors must carry all their own equipment and food, but are provided with water and a place in a tent each day and are supported by professional medical and operations teams. The format is very similar to the Tour de France, except by foot and self-supported.
3: Why was Iceland chosen as the location for the Roving Race in 2013?
We always seek to find geographically stunning, diverse, and unspoiled locations that are rich in culture. Iceland meets this profile perfectly. It is one of the most interesting and beautiful locations in the Northern hemisphere and is also the most remote of the Nordic countries which is very sparsely populated. 
Previous Roving Race locations have been Vietnam, Namibia, AustraliaNepal and Jordan.
4: Do I have to complete one or more of the 4 Deserts races before I can join a
Roving Race?
The Roving Race Series is completely separate to the 4 Deserts, although it is organized by the same company and follows the same format.  You do not need to complete a 4 Deserts race in order to take part in RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013 -- anyone may apply for a place in a Roving Race. However, Roving Races do not count towards qualification for The Last Desert (Antarctica).
5: Do I need to qualify to take part?
There is no qualification requirement but you need to prove that you are healthy and fit by submitting a medical form with information on your fitness level and medical history as well as a doctor's certificate, two months before the start of the race. You must be willing to commit to training for a significant amount of time.
6: Who typically competes in a 4 Deserts race or Roving Race?
Our competitors are made up of a diverse group of people brought together by one common goal: to complete the 250 kilometers / 155 miles of the race. They are typically high achievers who believe in maximizing every opportunity in life.  Many are working professionals who work full time. Some have families and do a lot of community service. Most lead a healthy lifestyle. The range of professions of our competitors includes medical doctors, professors, investment bankers, small business owners, actor / actresses, entrepreneurs, stay-at-home moms and dads, journalists, students, top athletes and coaches, military personnel and managers. 
There are many father/son, father/daughter, mother/son, husband/wife and brother/sister competitors. 
The races are international with more than 40 countries represented in each one. Typically 25% are women, and 75% are men
7: How much time do I need to do the race?
You need to reserve 9 days for the race, plus traveling time to the host town / city. You need to arrive 2 days before the start of the event and people stay until the day after the conclusion of the race, however you are free to leave any time after you cross the finish line but this means you miss the fun part, the awards banquet. 8: I don't think I can run 250 kilometers, can I still make the cut-off times?
The race is set up to allow for generous cut-off times. Approximately 20% of competitors will run most of the course, 60% combine running with walking, and 20% will walk the entire course. If you can complete in 40 kilometers / 25 miles in 8-10 hours then you will be able to meet the cut-off times.
9: How much training is required?
Our competitors are busy people – we don't expect them to train all the time, but a minimum amount of training is expected. Many complete the race with minimal training, some want to win and thus train a lot. Each competitor has his or her own goal. We simply want people to finish.

10: How far in advance do I need to sign up?
 The Roving Races are very popular. The ideal time to sign up is one year in advance – this not only increases your chance of getting a place but also gives you a good amount of time to train and prepare. The first step to sign up is to complete anonline application Your place is only confirmed once you have paid the deposit. 

The number of competitors for each event is limited - the actual number is different for each event. Once the event is full, all new applications will be put on the waiting list.
11: What is included in the entry fee?
 Your entry fee includes almost everything once you arrive at the event hotel in the host city the Friday before the event starts until you leave the Sunday after it concludes.  Specifically this includes:

  • Two nights’ accommodation in the event hotel (one night before and one night after the race on specified days). This is based on two people sharing a room
  • Tented accommodation during the event
  • Transportation to Camp 1 and from the Finish Line to your event hotel and all logistics during the event
  • Full medical and operational support during the event.
  • Drinking water throughout the event and hot water at each Camp
  • Breakfast and lunch the day before the race
  • Awards Banquet
  • Finisher medal
  • Official event clothing
  • Additional costs you need to consider are flights / transport to the event hotel and the equipment for the race.
12: What medical support is provided?
  We have a fully qualified team of medical doctors, mostly from the United States, at every race. Many of the medical doctors have worked at a number of 4 Deserts events and Roving Races. Most doctors are Emergency or Sports physicians with Wilderness qualifications and experience who have affiliations with Stanford University, the University of Washington, the University of California or other leading medical schools. 

During the event, there is a medical doctor at each checkpoint, to offer assistance and care on the course. There’s also a medical tent at each Camp, where competitors can seek medical assistance or advice. Note that this is a self-supported race - each competitor needs to bring the mandatory medical items that are listed in the equipment list.
13: What equipment do I need?
You must carry ALL the "mandatory" equipment items at all times during the event. This includes food and electrolytes. The Equipment List, that has all mandatory gear listed, can be found under the equipment section on this website and in the competitor area. The Equipment List also has a section of optional gear that you can choose to bring for additional comfort.
14: How much does an average backpack weigh?
When full, most competitor backpacks range in weight from 7-15 kilograms / 15-33 pounds, with the average backpack weighing 9 kilograms / 20 pounds (without water). Note that the weight of your bag will decrease each day as the  food forms a considerable part of the backpack weight.
15: Where do competitors sleep each night?
At the end of each stage, you will meet your fellow competitors, as well as the staff and volunteers, in an incredible campsite where you will sleep in specially made tents. You will get to enjoy the Nordic summer with bright evenings and late sun sets. Each competitor is assigned to a tent within the campsite which sleeps eight to ten people. The tent will be your home for the week. You will also have a warm fire each night and morning and access to hot water for preparing meals and drinks.
16: How do I get to the start of the race?
The host city for the race is the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. You need to make your own arrangements to get to the event hotel in Reykjavik. We provide information on common flight routes and a local contact to help you make arrangements once you get to the country of the race. This includes additional nights in a hotel, airport transfers and any additional travel arrangements. Once you have confirmed your place by paying the entry fee, we will send you more information on travel arrangements.

Transportation to Camp 1 at the start line arranged as part of the race. Return transportation from the finish line back to the race hotel is also provided.
17: What is special about RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013?
Each event highlights a culture in the region with the hope of preserving it for generations to come. In RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013, you will experience the Nordic heritage and culture and the hospitality of the local people, a warm contrast to its Arctic location. You will also see the true diversity of terrain as you pass through unique landscape including waterfalls, fjords, volcanoes and geysers. The race will then finish near to the capital city of Reykjavik.
18: Why do you limit the number of competitors in each event to a relatively small number?
RacingThePlanet events are a unique, special experience. Solitude leads to a different type of challenge and it can be a very spiritual experience. With a small number of competitors you will get to meet many of them, some who will likely become life-long friends.
19: What is the best part of the event?
Many say it's the competitors themselves – that they leave the event with a new set of friends from all over the world having shared a unique experience. Many call on these new friends in business later or just to have dinner when passing through someone's hometown. Some have even met their future husband / wife!
20: Can I run for a charity?
Absolutely – we encourage it! People support different charities for personal reasons and therefore we welcome you to choose a charity of your choice to support through the event. Many of our competitors have raised significant amounts of money for charities all over the world. Supporting charities is also part of the RacingThePlanet ethos. We support a relevant cause at each event to enhance education and knowledge to improve the lives of those in and around the courses.
21: My ultimate goal is to complete The Last Desert in Antarctica.
Does RacingThePlanet: Iceland 2013 count towards the qualifications?
No. The Last Desert (Antarctica) is only open to those who have completed two of the other 4 Deserts events which include the Gobi March in China, the Atacama Crossing in Chile and the Sahara Race in Egypt. The Roving Races do not count towards The Last Desert qualifications.
